Pierce Reminisces Spring .Mcetin; of Prince Rupert Presbytery of United Church Missionary Cc-opcratian Rev. William H. Pierce, pioneer missionary of the north coast, who will this year celebrate his sixtieth year in the ministry, was an honored visitor to the opening session of the Prince Rupert spring Presbytery held in the First United Church Wednesday afternoon. Recalling those distant , days following his ordination at Vic toria in 1887 Rev. Pierce described to the delegates something of the church's missionary efforts at that time. Turning from past records to present and future needs, Pres-bj 'ery Chairman Rev. D. W. More, in the capacity of convener, led a discussion on Christian Education. A progressive move in this work will be marked by the eila'alUhmcnt of a Bible School at Naramata in the Okanagan. According to Mr. M'irc's announcement the school will provide lay members with courses designed to aid them in Sunday Schcol work, women's work and leadership. To help attending students cover their living expenses, employment will bo arranged for them in the fruit industry. The major part of the evening meeting was occupied by a discussion on evangelism and so-rial service which dealt mainly with the subjects of closer rc- j lations between Anglican and ! In 1924 she was elected Labor member for the large industrial constituency of Middlesbrough and was one of the first half dozen women elected to the British Parliament. She represented this constituency until 1931. when she lost her seat In the House with the fall of the Labor government. A year after Hitler came, to power, Miss Wilkinson was In Germany speaking against Nazism. On returning to London she organized the reseue of Individual victims. In 1935 Miss Wilkinson returned to Parliament as Labor member for Jarrow, a northeastern shipbuilding tewn that for many years had suffered industrial depression. When the town sent a band of marchers to London to make representations to the government, she marched at its head, despite poor health. She was, as a member of Parliament, not concerned only in the difficulties of workers in her own area; in 1938 sr dld'a notable piece of work in piloting throutTi the House of private member's Bill on the Hire Purchase system which gave much - needed protection" to numbers cf people. When Labor entered the National-government in May 1W0, she was made Under-Secretary to the Ministry cf Pensions.
