IflDAkirtMA M I A HITS AT COMICS "Slaslick Uelter Thdn Sly Innuendo" of Modern Funnies REGINA, tt Mrs. Beatrice Trew, C.CF. member of the Sas katchewan legislature for the the ranch country constituency of Maple Creek, say that comic trips "tend to encourage a vulgar vocabulary in most Mrs. Trew, a 49-year old grandmother and only woman member of the legislature, told the Regina Council of Women that a steady diet of comics leads to "literary malnutrition." Comics were good only if they were "really humorous." When they deviated from humor they should not be labelled comics. "Even the slapstick type of humor is better than this sly innuendo so often seen In the comic strips of today," she said. The native of Coates Mills,, N.B., and farmer's wife, said sha was Inclined to favor cowboy comic strips. "There is always a strong moral in these and anyway you can't stop little boys playing and reading about cowboys and Indians." Mrs. Trew advocated a strict censorship of this type of litera- i tare. Another counter-measure would be more "good" magazines I at prices low enough for the child buyer.
