Macey's Take Port Edward Hilly Donaldson Makes Hit It was a thrill-packed game last night In thr Civic Centre when the luckless B.C. Packers Kjuad slipped under to the high flying Savoy squad by a close 6Q Jo 53 margin. It was not until the very last minute of play that "tha hotc!Tien. got the 5-poln; lead that gave them the win. This, puts, the Savoy quintet out on top of the league standing with three wins in four starts for a .750 percentage with the High School Just behind with two wins in three starts for a .CG7 average. The third team in the Senior "A" League B. C. Packers has yet to regiitcr a win but, of their last three starts, last night's "was the greatest number of points they have lo.T,t by. It was a penalty shot win last niaht with about one-fifth of each team's points being made on free throws. The Packers took the initiative In the first half, out-scoring Savoy In both quarters. At the end, of the first frame the score stood 11-9 and, by the first half rest it was : 37-20 for the Packers with both team ?' pounding hard. This was one of the fastest games seen in the Civic Centre for a long time with the two camps giving forth v'.th spme I"; very; boisterous cheering. ' "' The second, half of the game saw the Savoy squad come up frcm behjnd and take the win In the closing minute. As the last :j period; got under way the. two riya'j were separated by only '-two points, 37-35, Savoy having the cchje, the grind became even ; more intense as the pace speeded up. But the effort must have " been, Just a. lllile top much for the packers, for jn the last minute of. play, the desperate bid ...nut on bv Savov was the final f traw that broke the Packers' . liiback. Ui.h scorers for the" winner? were Ted Arnev, Ruper, 'Holkestad and Joe Davis with 17, 17 and, 14. points respectively. 'Gurvich'and Brown he!d up, the Packers' end with 15 and 11 points apiece. Working overtime handling the whistle by himself, Johnny Comadina held the game ably In check, handing out 33 fouls 19 to the Packers and 14 to Savoy. B. C. Packers Calderone 8, Gurvlch 15, V. Port Edward ... bowed down before a 39-20 lashing that Macey's handed K.lhem, but not without putting up a good battle. Macey's were all ..speed last njght and before Port . Edward realized what was hap--Liening the first quarter had ended with the score at 12-6 for iSihe locals. Again in the second EL. quarter the carnerymen slip n -ped still further behind, the shalf ending up 22-12 with the coffee-drinkers still out in the lead. For a few brief moments in. the second half Port Edward strove to even the match but they just did not have the drive to get thelr'offensive rolling nor the stamina to put up a tight enough defence. Nevertheless, It ' was a real crowd pleaser with the an on tnpflr tjvs t.hrniirVinii the tussk. Most noticeable In the Port Edward ranks was the ""lack of sparkle usually shown 'by their ace man Gurney. He was held down very easily last night and did nc I have his usual drive. In the second frame "the "Sweets' held the "Birds" scoreless while they chalked up 5 more points to take the lead at the half 7-6. In the third frame the pace became too much for the clothiers and the students jumped away out in front 22-10. The fans enjoyed the showing the teams put on and Sweet Sixleen is beginning to show signs of a first class ball team. GYKO WINS IN JUNIOR LEAGUE With both squads fighting hard the Junior League put on a good match when Gyro tangled with the Canadian Legion, the former coming out on top 41-30. By far the thing the crowd liked best was Coach Syd Woodside's last-minute decision to send his prize player out on the floor to drop in the final basket. Billy I. Donaldson went In and, with lowering Olsen and Carlson of the Legion on the guard line. Bill sneaked through their clutches to drcp in his marker. The astounding thing about this this? is that Bill is the smallest player in any ol the city leagues, He stands Just over four feet and is not yet a 'teen ager. But he came through with the goods last night while the crowd nearly went wild. The rest of the ame was in Itself a good enough hpy but, with this for a climax, it was superb. Gyro led all the way with the first period end-r Ing 9-8 while the second quarter finished up 24-16. The third part of the ball game saw Gyro pull still farther out In front with this frame ending up 36-22.
