The Sporting News points out that his test as a freshman pilot came early when, stepping into the slices of Billy Southworth, he found himself faced with finding replacement. for players traded during the win ter and lost through raids by the Mexican league. His daring decision to move Stan Musial from the outfield to first base and' liis success in alternatin three light-hitting outfielders, making Murray Dickson a win ning starting pitcher, convert ing Red SchcemJiehst into ; second baseman and in juggling his lineup and mound staff are cited as examples of his managerial genius. Credit for the spirit, courage and teamwork of the Redfoirds that overcame many obstacles also is given Dyer. The Redlbird manager won the 1942 award for the minors, when he piloted Columbus to an American Association pennant. Musial was hailei as the outstanding playwr of the year because, in Addition to taking over an unfamiliar position at first base and playing it well, lie ttot only led the National League in baiting with an -average cf .3G5, but was first in the Uumber of hits, runs, sin-filcs land doubles, topped the sluggers tailh a percentage of .587 and ranked third in runs batted in. Land For School At Port Edward Possibility that industrial development at Port Edward might trad to a "scramtble" 'for land in that area led the Prince Ru pert and District School Board to take serious consideration of setting aside ground there for school purposes. The suggestion was made by Inspector of Schools E. E. Hynd- niaa who. foresaw that, in the event of major expansion there, no land might be left .for schools. Land at the townsitie, now con trolled by the Department of National Defence, soon will revert to the provincial Department of Lands and Forests, he said. The matter was referred to the board's building committee for investigation. Advertise In the Dally News.
