PEACE IN INDIA E POCHAL HISTORY of the first magnitude is made for India with the announcement that the Btish government is turning over power to the leaders of India almost immediately. They are being given Dominion status at once andjiext year it will be for them to decide whether they shall or shall not remain as part of the Commonwealth of Nations in one or two Dominions. It is eventful news, indeed, and it is to be noted that it appears to be meeting with satisfaction in all quarters concerned. Even Former Prime Minister Winston Churchill approves unqualifiedly as being the only means of averting a blood bath in India. Most satisfactory of all to observers of the Indian scene is that both Indians and Moslems appear to be agreed' on the-idea of partition of Hindustan and Pakistan, something' which it had not been so certain the Hindus approved of. . BUILDING DIFFICULT IT IS NOT BECAUSE there are the unwillingness I or- lack of incentive to build in Prince Rupert that permitted construction value is down considerably this year in comparison with last. Possibly there was never a time in the history of the city when new buildings homes and business structures were more needed or desired than they are today. But there is still the scarcity of materials and, to some extent, competent labor. Adding to this, the rising cost's and building today is rendered even the more difficult. However, it Is a situation that Is not peculiar, to Prince Rupert. Many a building project is stymied in Prince Rupert. There is a lot of work to be done. It makes a reserve of spending and employment which, from these standpoints, may be even more valuable to the community from an economic standpoint a little later on. , I" FATHER'S DAY FATHER'S DAY, which is being marked nationally in Canada on Sunday, June 15 was originally started by a woman. It was not started, as some cynical persons might suppose, by a group of paternal parents t jealous of the fact that there was no day set aside for them like Mother's Day. Actually, It was started to promote better father-child understanding three years before the first official Mother's Day, It wa9 in 1010 that Mrs; John Bruce Dodd of Spokane, Washington, felt the need of a special day to honor father and "to call attention to father's: place in the homer the training of the children, the safeguarding of the marriage tie, the protection of womanhood and childhood." Mrs. Dodd embodied her wishes in a letter.to a Ministers Alliance which favorably received it. From this humble beginning, the day of remembrance grew to national importance gaining impetus throughout the United States and Canada. Soon it became- the custom to wear on Father's r Day , a; white rose for remembrance and a red rose for living tribute. ' 1. Father's Day i& being marked this year for the ' first t time since before the war. v-M.. GRANNY'S GRAMMAR THERE ARE AGREEMENTS pro and con every I day as to whether schooling children were given in past generations was "tougher" than it is today.. Grandma and grandpa seem to think so, and so do ma and' pa. If they want some confirmation of their argument, .a little volume miblished in 1836: which mav or may not be called the "good old days," back them up at least so- far as- grammar is concerned.. The grammar is dedicated to the "younger classes of learners." For the more erudite;- the book's title in full is "Abridgment of Murray's English Grammar with an Appendix Containing exercises in Orthography, in Parsing, in Syntax and in Punctuation, designed-for the younger, classes of learners " Did we hear someone say they were playing" hookey today? Author Lindley Murray's idea' must have been that children of the day; were capable of a full "Sunday" vocabulary. There is no simplified languageand no doubt dictionaries were used onen, oitenerana oitenest. Rote learning was approved with lessons label- I Hkp "PfnmismintiR F!Yiorriap! in Vtrmnnmna Parsing" suggested for memory work. Hyper-syllabic rules abound for instance: "The conjunction disjunctive has an. effect contrary to that of the conjunctive copulative; for'as the verb, noun or pronoun, is referred to the preceding terms taken separately, it must be in the singular number." Anyone dispute that? The volume has one saving grace it is only 80 pages long.
