GYMNASIUM EXTENSION TO CIVIC CENTRE TO BE BUILT AT ONCE An "immediate" start is to ho rrmrlp tion of the projected gymnasium wing at the Civic uwure iouowing me demolition ot the Koosevelt Park gym from which materials will ho snlvncrori for use in the new building, according to Civic Cen-re manager Don Forward who announced the award ing oi aemoimon tenders Tues day. The projected Civic Centre extension will be a fully equipped gymnasium with a rccm for boxing training in the semibasement, according to the pres ent blue prints. The added space and equip ment will be in constant use, if the experience of last winter, when the main gym was in de mand for more time than was available, is any criterion, according to Mr. Forward. This Is in contrast to last winter's experience with the Roose- avanaDie lor most of the time due to heating difficulties. Its popularity also was hampered by the fact that it is so far from the city's centre. "Decision to demolish the Roosevelt Park building was made by a full meeting of the Civic Centre board of directors after six months of studying the needs of the community," Mr. Forward said. "After examining the practical uses to which the building could be put to, it was decided that its material should be used to build a eym- Jinasium wing at the Civic B "To maintain the Roosevelt gym we would be faced with replacement of the present roof, complete electrical re-wiring. and re-building of the walls to keep the rain from driving through. This would entail an expenditure of at least $10,000. "We also were faced with exorbitant heating costs of a building that is too small for the minimum lacrosse floor and which has its spectator space behind pillars, obstructing vision." . Mr. Forward pointed out that the gym was originally ptfr-3hased a year ago from War Assets on a city priority with 2ivlc Centre funds at a cost of $5,000. The deal was subject to TIMIUlt H. This move follows the discharge of 200 dissatisfied ratings. The Royal New Zealand Navy was already seriously under-manned and the discharge of these trained men has made the staffing position acute. PRINCE RUPERT WATER ALL OFF RIVER HIGHWAY Doug Frizell Reports Kuad In Good Shape Returning Monday night after motoring from Vancouver, Douglas Frizzell reports that danger of inundation of the Skeena River by high water now seems over. There was no water over the road at any point when he came through yesterday, the highest approach to road level being one foot. The worst part of the entire road from Vancouver, according to Mr. Frizzell, is between Prince George and Vanderhoof where there are several "gumbo boils." Weather was warm all the way and the road is dusty.
