RUPERT MOTORS I.lMlTFI) Phone r.rm THE tiGN nr PTTr eriitfirr Dr. William Kowan Believes Game Bird Population Up From 1941 Slump j EDMONTON O) Alberta's jnimrods should experience a. good hunting season this year, ;ln the opinion of Dr. William I Rowan of Alberta University's department of zoology. Dr. Rowan has been doing research on game birds for some years. The upland game bird population seems to be on. the Increase this year, and he expects that they will. come out of the "slump" which has kept their numbers down during the last few seasons. His research has led him to believe, he said, that there arc cycles In prairie chicken, grouse and jkirtiidge jxpu)aUon which occur about every 10 years. Game birds were scarce In 1934, but their numbers Increased In succeeding .years tL'.l 1S44. when they were hit bv an other slump, as predicted by Dr. Rowan. It seems t take several years for the. situation to right Itself. mm? .JBC M liH'IFV.TI (quicker SHAVC5 i? 1 look. But this year It should be normal again. The birds seemed to have weathered the winter without adverse effects, although an unfavorable nesting season may retard an Increase in their numbers. Three or four wet days In early June could wash away nests at a critical time. Dr. Rdwwi has noted, however, that partride and pheasant seem little affected by such occurrences and soon build their nests again. Cycles In game bliii population seem to be effective over a wide area. Their results can be seen from the prairies to the eastern seaboard both In Canada and the United States. Precise causes of the cycles are not known, but they seem to be the result of a recurring combination of circumstances. Hunting may be somewhat restricted this year by the announced Increase of about 22 per cent Jn ammunition prices. Dr. Rowan intends' to continue his research Into the complex priMem of Uie game bird, and expects to be able to analyze it more fully during this season's expected peak.
