Awbery, heiid of the technical records section j of the Atomic Energy Depart-, ment of the Ministry, said. j I "Scientists giving a careful study of these reports will find a great deal of hitherto unpublished Information of great value to the release of atomic energy for industrial purpose,", he added. j The 73 documents are neatly piled in the natural science sec-tion of the London Kensington Museum. A limited number of copies are available at the Ministry of Supply and will be loaded "to responsible scientific workers presenting their crean tlals." Mr. Awbery's reply to the ques tion whether accredited reprc senlativefi of foreign govern merits in London would be ,U lowed to see these documents was "they will be lotuwd by Hi1' Ministry of Supply to respun slble scientific workers wlm win be allowed to takr them for study purposes." The government's derision t-allow these documents to be released followed' requests fur tliei: publication from Pior. J. D. Vi kroft, Director ol the Government Atom Research Station u1 Harwell, Berkshire. The documents were viewed at the Ministry of Supply's heavily-guarded atomic develop meat section in the 10-sturv Shell Mex house building- on the Thames Embankment. The utom research workers are completely Isolated from the rest of tiv occupants of the bulkling. The walk of their department liave been reinforced by heavy iron bars and the only entrance re through stepl grilles guarded by uniformed police. The documents themselves take up little room. They tell a part of the story of Britain's contribution to the development of atomic energy," Mr. Awbery said. ''During the war they were heavily guarded and their, contents were secret. This secrecy was . obvious be cause we did not want anyone to know that British natural scientists were engaged in researches in basic physics. "The British, American and Canadian governments the three concerned with the production of the atomic bomb-agreed to releace information on the. wrk they had done. These documents give some idea of .the British effort. "Tills release of information is In line with the government's policy of not regimenting scientists and not tying them down about their activities." Mr. Aw ber.v suld.
