TIME TO DELIVER fHEN HALF A DOZEN or sq enterprising and lorwarcWooking members of the Prince Rupert Lpamber of Commerce, with Hon. E. T. Ken-ney, now minister of lands and forests but then an ordinary private member of the legislature as their spokesman, embarked on a goodwill mission to Alaska two years ago last fall, they started a direct and friendly relationship with the adjoining American territory which has now grown into a very tangible and realistic association. The link was further welded when Alaskan delegates came down to the Associated Boards of Trade of Central Brit-ishColumbia convention at Terrace last August and. there have been further friendly exchanges since then that have gone to emphasize the benefits thai are possible of derivation from the interde-pendability of the port of Prince Rupert, the central interior of British Columbia and southeastern Alaska. The President of the Wrangell Chamber of V Lommeree was in i'rince Kupert rrulay checking .uprfon'ther on the possibilities of his community "using 'this port instead of continuing its dependence on Seattle which has become so used to exploiting ,the territory that it has become increasingly ruth-'u less, callous and indifferent about the kind of treat-j ..merit it accords. Mr. Baltzo's interest in Prince ; Rupert has been accentuated by the danger of an- other general shipping strike on American steam-i ship lines plying into Alaska. He was wondering i ' ' what might be clone about shipping foodstuffs pro-! v duced in the central interior through Prince Ru-I ' pert to his town. Thereby is another illustration of 1 " market for the interior .that is 'just waiting to be J t organized. It is becoming evident that here is a ; ; market that can absorb almost everything in the ; - way of produce that can be made available from - this area. It is.an opportunity that somebody with j the will and ability to organize is going to be able ; to cash in on. ; It was said not long ago that southeastern Al- aska was not aware of what central British Col- umbia had to offer, That seems to have changed ; now and one wonders if central British Columbia ; is aware of the market that Alaska presents. It ' has, indeed, reached a point where central British ; , , Columbia is going to have to show that she is .ready ! to .deliver the goods. The Pririce Rupert Chamber of Commerce has ! led a movement that has interested Alaska very ; definitely in this area. Now it is up to us to capi- jtalize on that interest and get organized to deliver. I Lshty that is the most important thing to do ETnovr in further fostering our friendly and practi ' cancelations with our neighbors across the line to ,7w...the north. DENIS MURPHY MR,., JUSTICE DENIS MURPHY, formerly of the Supreme Court of British Columbia, j whose passing we recorded yesterday, was j one of British Columbia's most distinguished na I tive ons. Here in Prince Rupert, as in many other J of the outlying communities of province which he visited as he rede the Assize cuircuits for many years, he became well known and highly esteemed. Denis Murphy was not only an able, fair and learnetV jurist but he was also known as one of the most interesting raconteurs of earlv British Col- umbia history. Born seventy-seven years ago in ! the frontier cow and gold country of the Cariboo, r he knew this province as few men do and that ,wr '-'knowledge and understanding stood him in good J stead in his duties as an administrator of juris- prudence. In his passing, British Columbia loses j one of its extraordinary citizens, 5 i TRANSCANADA'S SAFETY THE TRAGEDY which appears to have overtaken TransCanada Airlines transport, missing since the first of the week when it failed to find u its,w,ay into Vancouver airport, is a lamentable incident but the very fact that it was so unusual goes to emphasize an epviable record which Trans Canada has had in its career of commercial avia tioh. This is but the second loss of this kind it has had in almost a decade of extremely successful operation during which mounting thousands of passengers have been safely carried. When one thinks of the shocking series of disasters that airlines in the United States and other parts of the world have suffered, it makes the rec ord of TransCanada, in snite of this current sad disaster, the more impressive. PROCKTER, Rector, St. Andrew's Cathedral) Utopia was the dream of a Catholic scholar at the end of the Middle Ages. It told- of a conception of perfection in human society. This dream waited for about three hundred years and then men arose who said it was no dream. would be perfectly natural perfection. Marx taught that the whole march of history was wending its way through Wood and revolution to this end. And so in our times a new Gospel came to birth. The teaching, as everybody knows, is that what is wrong with man is not sin, but capitallrm, the profH motive and the price system. You see, all Oospels start out with the fact that the human race has got on the wront' track. And then they tell us how the race of the individual Is to be saved. . . that s( how we are to recover what we have lost and Uve as we are supposed to. live. The modern Utopians are sure that man is naturally good and thrt the rearon this Is not apparent Is that the masses have been corrupted by a certain frw Individuals for their cwn benefit. You see, they also have Identified a Kingdom of Evil against which war has to be wapd. And. of "our.w l.hp ult.l- mate heaven which Is cf this i world ra-lher than of any other Is something which is planned for our children or children's a children. A great many Christian preachers and writers haye also dabbled with the possibility of I the Utopian Idea, probably bp- cause It Is so attractive that we would like to think that It could be true. In their enthusiasm for Utcpia 4hty dismissed about ninety per cent of the Bible as nonsense and with, great gusto quoted the parts that backed ud ihis particular conception. All that had to do with human brotherhood, feed-ins the hungry and healing the sick was the Inspired Word. But how can anjfoody pick and choose In this manner? It reminds me of a man who once asserted in my hearing that the only significant" thing about a man is his thumb. But has his thumb any uSignif!;ance at all aoart from the rest of hm? The difficulty about attacking the Utopians Is that they immediately ccwe back with the accusation that anyone who does not believe what they be lieve is not Interested In Jus- tic. . and not Interested In the poor and down-trodden. Which again reminds us of the bigots In the field of religion, To a Utopian, an unbeliever is either 5 fool or a heel. But no person who believes the Christian Palth can. possibly be a Utopian He (th? Christian) Is committed to a belief n the fundamental fallibility of human nature. He has to believe that, man is not naturally .good but naturally bad and that even the Forgiveness and Grace of the Pivlne Redeemer has to be continually asked for and obtained and that the only hope of any perfection lies in being finally delivered through death and resurrection from the human clay. Admitted the Christian Is committed to love his neighbor as himself, CENTRAL HOTEI Weekly and Monthly Ratei for your convenience 4 . He Is committed to a continual exercise of Repentance where his own thortcomlnss are concerned and Charity whero other people's shortcomings are concerned. The surprising thing Is that Utopians who shout the loudest about human brotherhood sewn to be getting progressive-ly more and mere ruthless and pitiless in thei dealings with their fellow creatures. Wars when most everybody" was Christian were not the dreadful things they arc today. If von think your neighbor could be naturally good and he does something: bad, you Immediate ly conclude that he did it deliberately. The inevitable end of that parade as we see It In one European country after another Is that the more the people believe n a Utopia, the less likelihood Is there that they will have anything.
