The Indian problem, Khan believed, was one for the ! United Nations to take over. If It was left undecided, world i peace would be a "mockery and sublime nonsense." i Khan, after an Intensely int-jeresting sketch of Indian history i and customs to form a b5ck- ground, dwelt on the traditional differences of the Hindus and Muslims in mentality, attitude and physical ways of living. They were as two naUons with no friendship in the past and no common ground on which to come together in the future. There were differences that could never be submerged by one side or the other. And, if any attempt were made to create a single government in an independent India, there could never be assurance that the rights of the 100.000,000 Muslims would be respected by the 300.000.000 Hindus who, in the past, had never shown disposition to tol erate the Muslims or even accept them as friends and equal be ings. At the outset, Kahn saw the hope for world peace in acceptance by the naUons of a spirit of i interdependence, in thin kins in world instead of national terms. Although the only career open to th vast majority of Indian women was early marriage and motherhood, there ws no such tiling there of the hand that rocked the cradle ruling the woric. Denied the privileges of civilization, kept in confinement and the victims of superstition and disease, Ind ian women were still in com plcto subjection. Becoming mothers in their teens, often married to old men and becom ing widows at early age, their children were often undersized and weak physically. Infant mortality of forty percent was common. In spite of all this, a few Indian women became lab orers and clerks and, in recent years, there were some instances of where they had reached political prominence and Khan added: "I sincerely believe it Is not the intellect they lack but the chance which, if they were given, they would come to the front and play a part in national life." Differences among .the Hindus had dated back to the advent of the Aryans nine centuries before Christ before which It had teen shown there had been a high state of cillizatldn in the vast sub-continent. After centuries of division and quarrelling between princes and kings, the Muslims had made their first appearance In the Twelfth Century at the Invitation of Indian Princes. They It had been who developed a high degree of culture. However, all attempts to fuse the cultures and customs of Hindustani and Islam had 'failed and there was still, as there had always been, a vast gap between them in ways of living. There was a continued lack of goodwill and the best that could be hoped for was a mutual understanding! of interdependence.
