A letter ifrom Minister of Labor G. S. Pearson read in city council Monday night Informed the aldermen that the union's application to hsve a conciliator attempt to settle the dispute had been granted. The conciliator will arrive in . the city In the near future, the letter indicated. The 40-hour week clause is 'one which the city electrical workers insist b? included in the contract being drawn up be tween (he city and the union and Is the only ore which is causing major difficulty in settling the tnntrart. Council is equally lnsistanl that the present 44-hour week remain in effect. A suggestion toy City Clerk Thain that City Solicitor T. W. Brown be appointed to deal with the conciliation proceedings was I passed up when one of the aldermen suggested that it was likely that the conciliator would want to deal with the city's wage committee and the union bargaining agents. If conciliation efforts fall, the matter probably will go before an arbitration board, whose findings will be binding on both parties. Council also was advked by the labor department las'; night that the Civic Employees Fed eral Union, local Number Five, has been certified as bargain ing agent' for "inside" workers at the City Hall.
