Making Promises Good T IS QUITE A WHILE I committed himself to the 'would be made of the Hazelton route northward to connect with the Alaska Highway and on to the Peace River and we had begun to wonder whether ( it would; ever be done at all. Therefore, the announcement of Hon. E. T. Kenney, minister of lands and forests and Central British Columbia's : sole representative on the government's side of the ' Legislature, who is now doing the rounds of this part of the country, that both a ground and aerial survey is to be undertaken this year, commencing ' just as soon as weather permits, is very satisfac-, tory. The making of such a reconnaissance is in keep-! ing; with the new interest in northern and central . British Columbia which is becoming so marked ; these days. Useful and much-needed information ; will be obtained about the route which we have ' long .claimed .as being the best one, particularly j as far as the natural resources it will tap are con- kerned and also in regard to conditions for winter : operation and maintenance. It is particularly grati-. f virig that P. M. Monckton, an old timer of this part I of the country and a good friend, should be put in charge of the survey. if. if if. THE CONSUMER'S TURN ; ' A ERTAIN WOMEN'S GROUPS are endeavouring v. to promote a buyers' strike in Canada. The tactics of the groups seem to smack of Communistic ' influence, and Canadians are getting bored by the Communists, to say the least. But this is not to say that a buyers' strike is an impossibility. .Such a strike occurred spontaneously in 1920, and prices came down with a rush. The point about that strike was that it was sponta-neous. Consumers almost overnight realized that : it might be better to save a little money for a rainy : day than to squander it on merchandise they didn't ; really want The atrociously colored silk shirts that ; been created to attract the wages of munition work-' ers were left on the merchants' shelves. People stopped buying luxuries entirely and became re-; luctant even to buy necessities. Prices came down because there were cancel-. lations of orders on a large scale and merchants 1 would not reorder until they could get prices at ; which they could be sure of passing on the goods ; to ihe public. As orders fell off at the factories, ; workers were laid off or had their hours reduced and? their incomes shrank accordingly. f The incident was a striking illustration of the Hact that, in the long run, the consumer is the boss. ; There are signs that he is again feeling his power. ' Only the other day a man who disliked the lack of ; service that greeted him in one shop where he had gone to buy a suit walked out and placed his order elsewhere. We may yet see the day when an cm- ployer will feet safe in firing a clerk who makes the I common error of regarding customers only as nuis-i ances ttfjbe suppressed. ' BOSS WHO IS POOR jiiESSRS. COLDWELL, GILLIS AND CO. are ,IVI shouting to high heaven because some of Can-: ada's employers made money Jast year. -, t In 1946, the country was .at the peak of peace-; time prosperity. Wartime excess-profits taxes had been removed from individuals and partnerships ,rid reduced for corporations. ; Employers .who couldn't make money in 1946 i are poor prospects as employers. The outlook would ; be poor for Canada. The great depression of the ; thirties would not have happened if employers had been able to make money. The poorest type of boss ; is the boss who is poor. Though thousands of miles may separate mother and child; though their opinions differ and sense of values vary, their love or each other'which is the truest, purest love, unites them for all time and under all circumstances. It is Mother who is always forgiving and conciliatory. It is Mother who forgets the unpleasant and cherishes the pleasant memories. Text: "I call to remembrance the unfeigned falUi Uiat is in thee, which dwelt first In tby grandmother, Lois, and thy mother, Eunice." 2 Tim. 1:5. We can imagine a gleam of joy in the Apostle Paul's eye as he writes about a taitli "unfeigned" Paul is happy because a young p readier would carry on in the same faith after he, Paul, was no more. As Paul contemplates this youth the forces back of his life are .not forgotten the faith of a grandmother; theti of a mother, -each I . planting in the heart of .a grow-las child a portion of .her own faith, and witnessing it's de velopment. Paul, realizing the value of a good mother's influence, rejoices. What constitutes a good mother? Certainly not the make-up and trinkets with which many try to roll baek th years but rather .the Inward beauty w h 1 c h thlnes through wrinkles, keeping life in it's prl4. because jer soul fs planted by "the rivers oi waters."
