PHONE 649 220 Sixth Street HOW MAPLE SUGAR WAS FIRST MADE JASPER A muple breakfast, featuring twenty gallons of Vermont map!e syrup brought expressly from the Green Mountain state to the Canadian Rockies was one of the concluding events of the educational conference of the National Life Insurance Company at Jasper Park Lodge here Saturday. More than five hundred men and women were served wheat rakes specially cooked by Chef Henri Freitag and his helpers. On their "flap-Jacks" was poured generous helpings of the sweet drawn from the tapped maples. Only in Eastern Canada and northeastern Unite-? States out of all the world U maple sugar nude in any quantity for marketing. To the life insurance people gathered from 37 states it wss explained by a Vermont speaker that it takes approximately thirty-five eaMons of sap to make a single srallon of syrup and the Indian legend of the fir?t discovery of maple su?ar. was handed down by Rowland I Robinson, an parly Vermont J writer, was recalled. j According to the lcerxl an j Indian, Woksis, set cu for his J firt hunting and left in the wigwam his squaw, Moqua. She ( busied herself during the day i with the preparation of their evening meal, putting some moose meat to boil in a kettle of water which she had scooped trp from the base of a maple tree. She also busied herself with embroidering for him some moccasins and berune to absorbed In this that the kettle boiled dry. When Woksis re turned the moose meat was burned. "but as he eagerly de- I voured it he found it extraord- j Inarily sweet. Instead of upbraiding Mcqua for her neglig ence he broadcast on all networks that Moqua had been visited by a heaven-snt messenger who had imparted to her the secret of the sweet sap. of the maple tree. Thus the Indian discovered maple sugar and the white man learned it from the redman. The insurance men entrained Saturday afternoon on a C.N.R. special after a three-day convention, charmed with their first visit to Jasper National Park-recalling proudly that, although the Canadian Rockits were more majestic, they were geologically younger mountain than the modest green ones of Vermont. m PICTURES FOR JULY Forthcoming Attractions at Capitol Theatre Here Fixture list for the month of July at the Capitol Theatre here ts announced by Manager J H.
