T-38 Basketball LOCALS ALL BUT WON LAST NIGHT'S GAME OVER DUKE OF CONNAUGHTS; STAGED SENSATIONAL rlNAL EFFORT Battling before 800 howling fans, the Duke of Connaught High School hoop squad from New Westminster took the second straight match from a fighting Bo-Me-Hi Rainmakers' quintet last night by a score of 54 to 49. In the first quarter the Dukes jumped into an early lead which the 'local students just couldn't quite, overcome. It' was a repetition of Wednesday night's opening quarter in which the visitors got a 12-point advantage which let them romp through to. victory In the first game. The score at the end of this first period was 21-9 for the southern team. Up to the end of the first half it was. a slow game with neither team playing very close. The Rainmakers were left farther behind when the half ended with the Dukes leading 32-17 at the halfway mark. But it was a fighting bunch of Rainmakers that came back into the game after the half. They tore1 through the Con- naught defenses which were like so much paper, fighting every Inch of the way to cut down their opponent's lead. From the breather on both referee and umpire were kept hopping dislv ing out penalties much to the crowd's disapproval which all led to hard fighting on the part of both .squads. Tills was the half in which the Rainmakers really shone. They completely dazzled the southern lads with this new type of aggressive ball playing, which took the visitors by as much surprise a the zone defense tactics they displayed had bewildered the locals. By the end of the thifd quarter the students of Prince Rupert's green and gold had whittled the lead down to 8 points with the southern team still Business and Professional HELEN'S BEAUTY SHOP Permanent Waving. Again In the fourth quarter the Rainmakers held the southerners scoreless until the closing minute of the mlx-up, dealt a bitter blow when For-man, playing at guard, was banished from the game with five personal fouls. This was tragic in that Forman had held Fowlersix-foot three and a half Inches tall practically scoreless. From the second that Forman left the floor the Dukes put on a last-minute bid which gave them the victory that was so important. The crowd was wild when, with Bo-Me-Hi on the short side by two points, Hartwig dropped in a beautiful looper from the corner that would have tied the game up, only to have the referee disqualify it. Throughout the tussle, the crowd was in an up roar. Howling, screaming and at many times stamping their feet, they showed their alter nate approval and disapproval It was a capacity crowd, with many having to be turned away from the doors, that filled the Civic Centre gym. All were absolutely satisfied that they had seen a bang-up basketball game. After the game coach Ken Wright of the Dukes spoke briefly. He stated that it was a fine team Prince Rupert had and that he hoped that they would accept an invitation to attend the Provincial High School Basketball Conference to be held in the south In March. But as the final decision of acceptance has yet to be made, coach Alex Bill of the local students did not state whether his team would be able to accept. MACEY'S WIN OVER VISITORS Leading most of the way, Macey's basketball .squad downed the Duke of Connaught intermediate team last night in the prelim to the main event 43 to 33. Although the score docs not show it, the game was close with little to choose between the teams. It was not until the closing minutes that Macey's romped away with a 10-point lead. The score stood at 10-8 at the end of the first quarter. In the sec ond period the teams tied each other to keep the score separated by only two points at the half 16-14. Then in the third quar ter the Dukes put on a drive that tied the fixture up at 26-26. But, with the two Pierce brothers showing the way, Ma cey's drove through the Dukes' defense to move well out in front with a ten-point lead. Both teams fought hard with the Dukes surprising everyone by using a man-to-man defense, something their senior teams did not use once. With both I teams playing the same type of game, the fans were treated to a fine display of wide open ball Duke of Connaught Flynn 6, Hudson 2, Mawhlnncy 9, Peter son 2. Kcnnish 6. Macdonald 5 Law 3.
