Neglecting Home Defence THE ANNOUNCEMENT of the Minister WJTH of National Defence at Ottawa that Canada's naval strength is to be divided almost equally between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, the strategic position of Prince Rupert on the Pacific C6ast again comes naturally to mind. We have no desire; to quarrel with Esquimalt but why the whole naval strength of this coast should be centred at that extreme end, lying almost within and nearly surrounded by American territory, is something that we have long failed to understand. In the changing picture of Canada's defence, more and more focussing westward and northward, it would seem logical that Prince Rupert should become the site of a naval base of equal if not greater importance than Esquimalt. It is not a very creditable! state of affairs If, for political reasons or just because naval personnel desires to remain around Victoria, the implementation of a realistic policy in the arranging of the defences of the country is interfered with. If it was so important that Prince Rup'ert should be a strong defence centre in the emergency of war, it is hard to comprehend why it should be utterly ignored in the establishment and maintenance of defence measures in time of peace and! against the possibility of war. Air; Service Soon that a strong case has NOf bp en put up before the Air Transport Board for the establishment of a regularly scheduled air service between Vancouver and Prince Rupert, It is; to be expected that the necessary licence will soon be granted and that the service will be duly commenced pas-slbly by late spring or summer. It will be an Important step lforwnrd In bringing up-to-date' transportation and communications between the two cltle$. The institution of such a service will have the tendency of speeding up the '. Trawling Tie-up THE TIE-UP of deliveries IN" ofj trawl -raught fish at Prjnle Rupert, this port feels diredtly the adverse affect of an industrial dispute getting out pf hand. In fact. It Is already quietening down the local waterfront very materially. The fish companies, in tbo long run, are not seriously hurt except for the disruption of their operations. They, of course, immediately cut over doing of business and making of contacts personally and by correspondence. Canadian Pacific Airlines, it Is already known, has gone a long way In connection with the preliminary arrangements for Instituting the service. The granting of the necessary licence Is practically a foregone conclusion. All that remains now Is to finalize the assignment of the necessary equipment to the route and the setting up of operating machinery at this northern terminal. Prince Rupert is at last to be on tlie air map. head with the laying off of workers who are the real sufferers. The operators of the fishing and delivery vessels, of their own choice, cut off their means of livelihood and support. But the worst sufferer, as usual, is the public. Apart from all that, of course, is the unfortunate situation whereby a form of food supply is cut off at a time when an orderly production and distribution of food is so badly needed. Ever stand in a spotlight? YouH notice it's mighty to see what's going on around you. TEMPERATURE EXTREMES The temperature in the Sahara desert Is often 130 degrees at mid-day, and near freezing at 'night. LARGE OR SMALL In anclfcit times capitals and small letters were never used concurrently;' either all capitals were used or all small letters. USES THE PECK AND HUNT SYSTEM -- Checking over the ledgers at the Franklin Park Zoo, Boston, Mass., the self-appointed clerk of the institution, a macaw named Leo, literally uses the peck system on the typewriter to fill out a report. Just how he would handle that telephone Is something only a realistic and stuffy (a word Leo loathes) person would bring up. Prince Rupert Citlzeiw' Forum dlicussed "Government, Business and Labor ( the British Trend." The score of members present concluded that a vast rc-organlzation of British Industry is necessary and that the present Labor government is not moving too rapidly In that r rectlon. Basing tKflr arguments on the nation's economic keyston coal the members brought cut the point that present pro- jductlcn shortages are a result cf nre-wor inadequacies In administration and production methods which must be strapped as quickly as possible and , xt -ced by mcdern techniques. In the light of the desperate economic urgency that exists In the country loday, this reorganization is not progressing rapidly enough, the numbers concluded. However, a too-ranld change, whlrii would be i tantamount to revolution, would create the danger of Industrial dislocations which could devxs-fat. the nation. In ar.iwer to the question; "Do you think that In the present emergency. Great Biltaln would be better served by a Coalition government?" the Forum meirers returned a unanimous negative. 8lnce the British pecple elected the liber government by a ifjustantlal majority, formation of a coalmen without a return to th; people would be undemocratic, the meeting held, The wartime coalition government wa? frrmtd In a state of high emergency and was the product of a state of political confusion I which 'followed a decade in i which ho general election 1ml bp en hehd.
