In-addition it is expected many United States citizens will visit the country as tourists when the abundance of wild game and fish is publicized. The tourist industry is not a large industry now but the country has some first class facilities. This photo is of Clymill Inn, located at Corner Brook, one of the finest hotels on the island. Fire Fighters began at the citv hall this afternoon, climaxing ment. Chairman of the conciliation board is County Court. Judge W. O. Fulton while tho city's z'epresentative is W. M. Watts. Thomas Elliott is the firemen's representative. The board was set up under machinery of the Provincial Labor Relations Act. Advocate for the fire fighters is John A. Staton, of Edmonton, vice-president of the Interna tional Association oIFlreFight-ers, while T. W.Brown, local Dar-ister, is advocate for the city. The firemen's demand is for a basic monthly wage of $200 for first class firemen who now receive $200. The city has offered $215. The firemen are also asking for a medical service plan to which both city and employees would contribute and also consideration of a group insurance arrangement. In presenting the case for the firemen, Mr. Staton contended that the wages here were out of line with other places when cost of living was considered. There was also equal responsibility here, he contended. Advising Mr. Staton are J. C. Ewart, president of the Pritr Rupert local, J, S. Furness end M. Hauser. City Clerk II. D. For C ity Clerk in Efficiency Interest A resolution .by Aldermau George Casey which would increase the authority of City Clerk II. D. Thain in the interests of city eflciency and econ omy was discussed by the aid-1 crmen last night, then tabled for two weeks while the aldermen consider its ramifications. Alderman Casey moved that "Mr. Thain be appointed cost I accountant and co-ordinator to survey the entire departmental field with a view to effecting greater efficiency in both the collecting of revenue and the prosecution of work and make such recommendations as he deems advisable in the interests "of efficiency and economy." The Job, Alderman Casey admitted would be "something like a city manager" but would not have the wide authority of a city manager which Alderman Casey had always opposed as dangerous to the autonomy of the council. Nor should it. Alderman Casey suggested, carry any higher pay, at least in its experimental btages. Alderman Casey complained that, throughout the years, there tended to be a "lack of your waiter."' DRUGS drugs J J Jl HOLLYWOOD cafe 1 lit I V Mi I the in -.1 an for of continuity" in city work and financial and technical information owing to the fact that the chage of councils brought ln new members. This, he said, tould be eliminated if a coordinator were put on the Job. The aldermen agreed generally that the "plan had "some merit" but declined to make a decision on it without further ttudy. AVOKS MANAGER Alderman Wilfrid McLean told the meeting that he favored a system of a city manager and four aldermen. Actually, he said, under the present set-up. the committee heads did most of the work and the "rest of us are honorary." Mr. Thain explained that he believed the position suggested by Alderman Casey would be more In the nature of a citv controller than a city manager The matter was referred to the March 23 meeting for further consideration.
