Soviet Russia and the western powers would be welcomed as great news indeed. Reaction of London and Washington to the new conciliatory attitude of Russia, whatever the reason for it may be, is reassuring. It is unfortunate, though, that, just as the air is beginning to clear in one international theatre, the clouds should be ominously lowering in another. Those are serious events that are occurring in the resumption of China's civil war and it is difficult to remain indifferent to their implications. THINGS between the Liberals and Conservatives, judging from a Conservative letter in this paper ; Monday, have reached somewhat of an impasse in endeavouring to find an acceptable candidate. Yet there should still be some possibility of an accord being reached providing Liberals and Conservatives are really interested in. electing a Coalitionist rather than" a Socialist to Victoria. 2 ' Possibly some Liberals would prefer to see a C. C.F.'er elected than a Conservative or there may be Conservatives who prefer a Socialist to a Liberal. That is not in line with the principle of coalition which involves the submersion of die-hard old party prejudice and the agreeing upon and support of a mutually acceptable candidate. If there is no give and take, no compromise, there can be no effective coalition. his business but fast. Socialism, therefore, has its rightful place in the scheme of things today.
