LIVING -COST COMPARISON-Post-war living costs have climbed in both Canada and the United States but. the increases have not been parallel. U.S. costs soared sharply with removal of price controls and during 1949 showed a tendency to fall off. Canadian costs climbed more gradually but retained the upward tendency during most of 1949. This Bureau of Statistics graph shows the trend of Canadian and U.S. living costs since 1940 but it docs not compare them. The graph starts from the assumption that living costs in the period 1935 to 1939-and they were different to start with equal 100. Therefore, this graph shows simply how costs have varied In each country in terms of each country's base figure. The Edmonton folk wanted 1 1n; H. ('. Government to go for (lie idea of an impartial commission to choose the best of three routes --jUie Ycllowhcad, Kicking Horse Pass and Crow's Nest Pass. Mj Carson turned thumbs down, s'aid a commission would take at least two years lo do the Job. Besides, he said, the Yellowhead and Kicking Horse routes pass through Federal parks (and so commercialized trucking is prohibited. Mr. Carson said B. C. could never give its backing to either route unless Ottawa would allow trucking. ( Mr. Carson much prefers federal financial aid to provincial' roads rather than a Trans-1 Canada Highway. He says that' most of our travel is north and '. south, not east and west. "What's the use of a road ' ' across this country, unless there are good feeder roads north and south?" he asked. . ! In the U. S. the Federal gov-' eminent ives money grants to the states for main highways That's why they're so excellent. There's no doubt Ottawa should do the same with the provinces.; especially B.
