' , V BUSINESS AND PROFESSION Maintain Highway PRESSURE OF WAR and more particularly, the menace of Japan, after Pearl Harbor, aroused the whole coast from Dutch Harbor to Panama. This hastened the buildinjr of the Skeena Highway. The job was driven through by prominent contracting firms. There, was one objective, and that was to finish the work with the least possible delay. Had there been no war, it can be safely assumed there would have been no road. But there is one and all that need now be done is in insist on seeing to it that the highway is properly maintained. There is a distinct danger in neglect. If ever allowed to deteriorate to a serious point, the consequences will be more costly than would have been the case had reasonable attention been given in the first place. PIONEERS PASS ON GLANCING JACK over the last half dozen years or po the number of pioneer citizens of whom we speak in the past tense cannot but impress one. But the impression should not unduly bring with it a sense of sorrow. Those who have gone had lived their lives and entered into rest following the natural law that embraces every mortal. Rather is it fitting to think of these as friends and neighbors who had contributed their industry, enterprise and usefulness to the common weal. Coming to Prince Rupert early in the city's history, they had a hand in laying a foundation.
