During the I week special attention of the public i. to be directed to the problems of one of the nation's most ...... vital activities Education the preparation of our greatest asset, our children and our youth, to assume their places competently in the affairs of society with its many aspects and areas. What we make of our children today maypositively be said to determine the state of the nation and the world . tomorrow. Education, therefore, i? something- with which it will behoove each and everyone of us to co-ojerate in full degree some way or another. Education is something: in which even- one of us can and should take a contributing hand not only the parent and the children who, of course, have a direct responsibility but thoe other people who have for some reason or another failed to accomplish life full natural aim and purpose of perpetuating the race ami having children of their own. One of the poorest attitudes of citizenship is that, because any of us should have no children of our own, it is a reason why we should assume no responsibility for the others. Fortunately, although the process may be slow, the authorities are getting away from that idea. Every good citizen of Prince Rupert married or single, child-laden or childless ha a direct interest in the education system and the schools and should exercise that interest Here in Prince Rupert educational problems have become, perhaps. . more acute than anvwhere else in the country. We ..... lack many things in the way of public utilities in Prince Rupert Our streets are poor, our sewers are breaking down, our telephone system' is inadequate. These are only a few of the many things that - are calling upon our financial resources as a com-:'; m unity to meet More important than them all it tl might w ith some justification be said, are the school facilities and. sad to relate, today finds them matching the ret in condition of inadequacy. So, in this - Education Week, it might be appropriate that we resolve ourselves with ail the resources at our com- mand, to co-operate in every way possible with the . . A building program is being initiated by our board of school trustees who realize that, under present conditions, it is an extremely difficult undertaking to do a real good job of education here. . Wt will be hearing a lot of generalities and : preaching and criticism, constructive and otherwise, as Education Week proceeds. If thereby a full measure of attention is focussed on the problems and difficulties of Education and each citizen comes to learn that there is some contribution he or she can make towards their solution and resolves to do it the campaign, which we heartily commend - today to the attention and support of all will be well worthwhile. 0 TWO OUTSTANDING EVENTS TWO.
