One tning w e ail can do about it is ui wic.pating ith an active interest in public i.xiaii's. Hitler, at the height of his aggression, delighted in saying that democracy was decadent and vroukl surrender because it was necessarily confused and undecided. Another totalitarian state, Russia, adopts the name of democracy and predicts the downfall of all other governments which it labels as "Capitalist." During the war the free democratic peoples proved that they were able to defeat Hitler's aggression and to "supply badly needed equipment to Russia which Communism could not produce for itself. Thev did this by voluntarily surrendering snnv of their freedom and by accepting whatever decree of control was necessary to defeat the ag-grecor. This voluntary self-discipline is onlv possible vheve peonle value their political freedom. The cMVnws of both Hitler and Communism have convinced us that we can retain our democratic freedom only by active participation in public affairs. YANKS TO RETURN? WAY THE ARMY has been reversing itself THE all over the north, it may yet be expected to go back to Prince Rupert, British Columbia, and demand the use of the big dock and warehouse it constructed during World War II as part of its sub-port shipments to Alaska and the Aleutian Islands, says Ketchikan Chronicle. The Rupert facility has military value, of course, as it did during the war. It not only gives an alternative to the long haul from Seattle, but an inland alternative that is away from the coast and involves no sizeable population along its right of way. Thus it would be easy to defend. Some goods can be hav-led north from Rupert to Haines and other Alaskan points by tug and barge, saving money to the armed forces. And the warehouse is big enough, something like 400,000 square feet in all, to he used as an arsenal or storage depot. ,, , TUfc-AiviUan, development ojf Alaska of course might make the warehouse useful in the next few years. If Rupert is converted into a free port, the warehouse could be used to store Alaska canned falmon waiting shipment to eastern markets and ; ' bversedsi,&. Both American and Canadian t', ship-, could use the- port without handicap or duty " being paid ' Alaska puin and newsprint en route to market could be stored there. The future of Rupert and' its warehouse depend, in part, on geo-political considerations but at least they should not be forgotten in the over-all armament and development program of the north country. su,vr' . , .... ..... .,.!. do not seem to know that It VI ;i v C Mill Ol.ATF n'DOF.
