(tf) 5(i(i In Major League Baseball By WHITNEY MARTIN NEW YORK (AP) Maybe someone should tell these old gaffers that baseball is a young man's game. The box scores to date have been filled with pre-war stock, some of it quite a bit pre-war, and, what's more, the fellows in this aged-in-the-wood class have been stealing the headlines more than a little. Here are a few headlines, picked more or less at random: "Litwhilcr Paces Braves In Victory." "Riddle Wins For Bucs." "Vaughan HiU Two Homers For Bums " "DiMaggio Hits 42S-foot Homo Run As Yanks Lose." "Trucks Beats White Sox." "Nicholson Homers For Cubs." "Mize Gets First Circuit Wal lop of Year." There are many more in which the names of the old guys predominate but that gives you an idea. The youngsters may be good and may have springs in their feet while the oldster? have creaks in their joints but the old men have what it takes in the clutches. Naturally, we're speaking of old in a baseball sense. Joe DiMajtgio, for instance, is only 33, but he has been playing major league baseball since 1936, which puts him a little on the antique side when you compare him with the young sprouts. It is heartening, at that, to find so many of these elderly gents still stealing the show. When the war came along it was predicted it marked the end of the careers for most of them. If they came through 'whole in body, it was believed the absence from a came which re- qujres a vast am0unt of co-or- dination and keen timing would wreck their chances of ever regaining their form." It did, in some instances. But most of the players who were good before the war came back still good. It' s true there probably has been a dearth of outstanding rookies. Most of them were in the war, too, and their period of baseball training was interrupted. It probably will be two or three years yet before the i rooKie crop is back to normal. Until then the fellows who made j the headlines before the war will cunuuue ui inane uie neaannes. mia Dy mai time, 100, mey wiu oe so old that the game Is no -longer fun. And they'll be ready and willing to call it a day. News. ANYONE Wishing Reservations for cabins at Salt Lakes for summer months, please contact MacDonald, Black 729, immediately.
