BASEBALL Commercials Are Winners Defeated Merchants 7 to 5 In Error-Studded Game Commercials won an error-stiidded game from the Merchants at Roosevelt Park last night by a score of 7 to 5. The Merchants spotted the hotelmen four runs in the second inning and the margin was too much for johnny Odowes1 crew to overcome although they kept on fighting and Were still in the game until the ninth when "Monk" Sunberg singled to score Lewis. However, Letourneau had turned on the heat and registered two of his four strike-outs to dampen the rally. Commercials out-fumbled the Merchants 10 to 5 but the Merchants' "boots" cams when they did most' good for the hotel crew. The unusually high score of errors was largely attributed to soggy and rough condition of the infield. In spite of the number of errors it was an interesting game to watch and most fans went home with their money's worth. Commercials' big second Inning came about when Sinclair hit sharply along third base foul line. Shier reached first when' Linney who had singled was forced out at third. Guthrie was safe when Sinclair scored on an error at the plate. Vanetta sacrificed Shier home on a well executed play. Then Kerr, in , centre - field, dropped Ewart's long fly for a two-run error that gave the Commercials the runs which turned out to be the margin of the ame. Lorne Vanetta showed his best form of the season at first base when he handled sixteen put-outs, three of them unassisted, without a "mis-cue. He was heavy hitter for the night and handled the sacrifice play faultlessly. Letourneau kept Merchants' big guns well in control and only Bill Lambie made good work with the lumber with two for four. He also scored two runs. Both pitchers were stingy with the hits, allowing Just iive each. rvuseaaies recora was Detter :n the strike-out department when he registered 7 to Letourneau's 4. Sport Shots Charles A. Now a touring California team that was to play here has called off the engagement. No explanation is given but it Is thought that they ran out of paved roads and were unable to keep up to schedule. Next on the program the local All Star team Journeys to Smi-thers for two games on August 31. However, the baseball executive is not forgetting the patrons here and the season will likely end up with a full quota of outside teams. Ketchikan would like to play here during Carnival Weetc and the series then might be of mutual advantage of all concerned.
