The Canadian Pacific annual report explains that operations were increased "to meet demands arising out of the quickening development of natural resources in British Columbia and the Yukon." The' extra flights included more services out of Vancouver to Port Hardy, to Whitehorse, and to Prince Rupert. Recently the latter operation was augmented by an extension of the route beyond Terrace to include Smithers and Prince George. It is to the credit of CPAL that its management has been alive to the requirements of this country and has done its best to meet them in spite of such disadvantages as the absence of an airport at Prince Rupert. Had it shown less interest, it is possible that the campaign for an airport here would have been seriously impeded. Far from doing the minimum necessary to get by, however, CPAL has steadily built up the service and lately replaced its Dakotas with fast Consoli- . dated Vultee Convairs. The.effprts of CPAL and other airlines to handle the traffic adequately cannot escape the attention of Ottawa authorities. No matter what improvements are made in other transportation services, the northwest will continue to need corresponding modernization of its facilities for air travel. If this is not forthcoming, much harm will be done to a part of Canada which, perhaps more than any other, holds promise of a development so great that it may alter the economic pattern of the whole country. . ' , An airport here will be a big step in the right direction and one which, in fact, is already overdue. At present, for example, we must bear the mortification of being so poorly prepared for air travel REFLECTS and REMINISCES Q If a taxpayer received In 1952 a single lump-sum payment from an approved Pension Plan in full settlement of his claims under the plan, mu.vt the amount be reported as income In that year?
