The fire lecord was 271 percent higher than in 1950 and 240 percent higher than the ten year average. A total of 144 fires burned over -151.009 acres of the district during the fire season of 1!1 (May to September i and resulted in total damage of $303,952 compared with 53 fires over 14 540 acres and $06 559 damage in 1950. One fire on the Queen Charlotte Islands covered about 11..7(i4 acres, cost -about $90,039 to control and involved total damage of $237,821. Total cost of forest fire fightnm in the district for the year was $129.0-36 over and above normal payrolls. "The "exceptionally dry season was illustrated by the fact that, there had been 6.29 inches of ram in the Interior as compared with 7.20 In 19a0: 1979 inches in the Prince Rupert area, compared with 32.95; 6 95 inches at Sandspit, compared with 13 78. and 9 48 at Bella Bella compared with 1325. There had also been a greater number of electrical storms in the Interior than usual.
