A Disgraceful Exhibition ATI! R DAY night saw the shame of Prince ) Rupert. Of all the drunken, foul-mouthed, wit-ess brawls that have ever been staged, the one that lisgi'aced this city surely has no equal. Possibly the most typical example of it was the 'emale drunk who reeled up to the door of the city all and demanded entry while supporters yelled ncouragement and dirty oaths from the safety of .he crowd. What a Joan of Arc she made! What a gallant, inspired band she had behind her! This was not the indignant voice of the people jeing raised in protest over their wrongs, whether eal or imagined. It was a tawdry carnival joined n by thrill-seekers anxious to get the full value out if the beer they had just drunk. What the thrill-seekers may or may not have ealized is that they were playing into the hands of l few radicals who would like nothing better than o see the law overthrown. To them it would not matter either that Prince Rupert was being given a black name in the eyes of the rest of the country so that it may be shunned as a riotous community at war with its police. Many of them do not live here anyway, so they could not care less what destruction is wrought. They are the contemptible type who make trouble on someone else's property, then beat it back to the peace of their own. As most of the town knows, Saturday night's demonstration had its origin among some who believed rightly or wrongly that the police here had been too rough on one or two recent occasions, aided and abetted by others who do not like police on principle. If there was any justice in their complaint, it is a cinch there is none now. There were hundreds who were just begging for a whack on the head, and the police would have been well within their rights if they had hauled them all in. They were a menace to the safety of the city. Had a fire broken out in the district at that time, the result could have been a catastrophe. People who take the law into their own hands usually find they have no law at all. Regardless of what the agitators think about it, this is not what the rest of the city wants. We want the protection of the police so that our homes, families and selves are as free from danger as the law can make them. The bleary-eyed, unwashed agitator can offer no substitute for that. In fact, he is one kind of danger we wish to avoid. The sooner he shuts up or is locked up so much the better. Since May 1. when the new niWirinnii l n.1r. nrnurnm uq InlnuliireH tvr.
