REASONS WHY RAILWAY (Continued from page li a steamer operates between Vancouver and Scrnamish and when you realize the CPR is the majority shareholder in Union SS Co. it makes sense that present boat arrangements should continue. It is also noted that the CPR announced last week it had "sold" the hull of the old Princess Mary to the Union Co. for coastal barge service an other cvidence'that marine traffic is to be encouraged. CPR will also put in fast and Sturdy vessels for passenger and freight service, Vancouver to Kitimat. This would indicate that the decision of the federal government to provide $15 million for a branch line, Terrace to Kitimat, has also not been overlooked by the CPR. The CPR would seem to be taking the view that while its rival may have stepped in front in land rail linvs, the waterborne busi-j ness on this coast is snmetning to which the CPR must continue to assert supremacy. - ; PGE BUSINESS UP Since business has been booming on the PGE, the CP has been most generous in lending tugs and barges to fill out in rush periods. All PGE freight cars enter Vancouver at CPR landing tracks with switching charges accruing to the CPR. That might be a reason, if no Squamish-Vancouver rail connection Is built, why the CPR would perhaps undertake the whole onerous business of administering this tug-and-barge traffic on a fee basis. Now let us look at the reasons why the Canadian National is opposed to a PGE rail extension to Vancouver. It was officially admitted that many months ago Premier Johnson asked the fed eral authorities for a grant of $15,000 per mile towards the cost of the Squamish-Vancouver con nection. - j This was the amount of the federal subsidy for the PGE, Quesnel to Prince George, now nearing completion. But not for the southern end. The people in Ottawa just shook their heads and failed to agree. When he couldn't budge them during his December visit, Premier Johnson dropped the rail plan in favor of a highway. The trend of his thinking was toward the CPR and the planned conference on barge service Is the result. WOULD ROB RUPERT Canadian National officials hold the view that money spent on a rail extension from Squamish to Vancouver would take away Dusiness irom the mainline CNR, Prince Rupert to Edmonton. In the far background, rising like a ghost from another age, Is that old agreement made by Grand Trunk Pacific (predecessor of CN) providing for diversion of transcontinental traffic to the PGE at Prince George when the PGE should be finished into North Vancouver. So long as the line is not finished south from Squanalsh, the agreement is a mere scap of paper. There are many other factors, but I have recounted the principal ones. Meantime, the PGE is facing the best traffic season In its history. Movins. f Cf '"' Complete. Rf-il 1 cient Se Canadian for oxypn. f welding WP"6 LINDSAY? & STOW' z.-.
