This la completely unethical thing to do and la definitely frowned upon by the published and practiced proprletiea of the game. There ire many ways In which this action can unfairly give Information to partner One way is where you pull out a low card In anticipation of the declarer playing the ace. Instead. he plays a low card, which you can win. It Is then necessary to put the first card back In your , hand ana select another one Partner thus knows you have a, least two cards In the suit. THE RUNNING GAME An age-old controversy still flares up when the proponents of the draw game open up their fire on the disciples of the knockout style of play, As Is usual in such arguments, both sides come out of it more convinced than ever that their cause Is vindi cated. , I Naturally, there are- exceptions to every rule. On frosty or alkali ice. or when the ice on the outside of a sheet is much heavier than the centre strip, a rink Is courting disaster If It playr the ouiet chap and lie game because there is" too much danger of guarding the opponent's rock when attempting to remove it ouietly. But in most curling clubs in Canada, the Ice Is reasonably keen, and under such conditions it is my humble opinion that draw weight is the basis of strong offensive curling. If you know what draw weight is you need very little mental calisthenics to figure out from ring weight, guard weight, back ring weight and bumper weight. The western provinces have been unjustifiably referred to as exponents of the running game. This is an overstatement. Witness the fact that Manitoba, where the chap and lie game Is predominant, has won the Dominion title in Brier Championships or fourteen put of twenty-three attempts, and Alberta, where the same style Is prevalent, has won four times, compared with Saskatchewan, (no offence intended i which has yet to produce e winner, but which is no doubt the most curling-conscious province, with more than four hundred curling clubs. Saskatchewan Is the home of the knock-out game by virtue of necessity rather than by choice. Its alkali water makes for heavy ice, its sub-zero temperatures provide ample hoar frost to discourage the ouiet draw game, and when its champions emerge to the Canadian finals where keen ice is prevalent, their free-throwing style is at a disadvantage. The record books give the nod to the draw or chap and lie game under normal conditions. Only the stones In the ring count when the score is racked up.
