After checking to find his partner had the missing ace, he had no hesitancy in bidding seven. Mr. Abel opened the Jack of. clubs and Mr. Muzzy's face fell when he saw the dummy. Obviously he had only 12 sure winners. Shaking his head sadly, he won the first trick with the queen of clubs and laid down two top trumps to make sure they were all out. Next he cashed his two remaining top clubs. At this point he thought of throwing the hand in for down one. Luckily he discarded that idea and ran the rest of his spades. On the last two spades he had to 'make two discards from dummy. His hand went waverinsly toward the 10 of hearts and Miss Brash closed her eyes as if she couldn't bear to watch. She realized the 10 of hearts miKht be an important squeeze card. When she looked again. Mr. Muzzy had elected to throw two diamonds from the board. Not ! because he knew those were the right plays, but only because they were the lowest cards 'in dummy. Mr. Champion's blood pressure had been rising all through the play. Laxton, a prosperous - looking, brick - built Nottingharrushire vil- lage oi some 300 inhabitants, is the only place in England where the open. field systtm of farming still goes on. Each farmer's land is divided into small strips scattered over huge unfenced fields. That was the farming method when the Normans came In 1066. William the Conqueror claimed all the land for himself, and distributed the villages with their open fields to feudal overlords whe thus became the lords of the manors. That setup died out nearly everywhere in England hundred of years ago.,; but.-for reasons 5ho one has been able to discover, many of the changes passad Laxton by. The villagers still are dealing with a lord of the manor as they've been dealing ever since they got their first Norman overlord, Geoffrey Alselin, In 1086. GROW SIMPLE CROPS They still are growing tho same simple crops by rotation in the 300-acre fields surrounding the village Just as they have been doing for hundreds oi years. Some 25 farmers rent strips of land from Earl Manvers in the big fields. The strips vary in size, averaging about three acres. Each man's strips are scattered so that he has some good land and some of the poor. Everyone grows the same crops autumn wheat in one field, nulse in the second. The remaining field is left fallow, so that each big field gets a rest every three years. The Dovecote, the village pub, is the scene of the annual court leet) a mediaeval survival. The court leet, out of which trial by Jury in the English-speaking world developed, has the job of seeing that the open fields are larmed properly. The 13-man jury U summoned from among the villagers by the bailiff, 63-year-old Elmer John Rose. "As soon as I get to know all ACCOUNTANTS PUBLIC ACCOUNTANT, Income Tax specialist. S. O. The way things look now, he will be the last. In Laxton the projected sale is a chief, topic of conversation: ' We don't know why it is, but Earl Manvers Is elderly and theiv is no son. It may be a question of preserving the estate," Vicar W. H. Snow speculated. The villagers don't know how to view the prospect of a change. "We're not very settled now," Rase said, "and don't know ho we stand. I just couldn't say whether it will be better or worse if a ministry in London take over. We've got a very good lord of the manor." In London'; a spokesman of the ministry of agriculture said tho villagers need not worry too much: "We are about to purchase the land at Laxton because of its historical interest. , It is our intention that when we become landlord the present system of farming will continue." MONTREAL ((Pi The Communist government of China still has a long way to ro in its campaign to improve the living standards, said Dr. A. Stewart Aden, medical missionary of the United Church. Dr. Allen, back home after being released from Communist imprisonment, told a meeting here the price paid for improvements to date has been complete conformity to totalitarian rule. 1 Phone 909 WRATH ALL'S Photo Finishing DEVELOPING, PRINTING ENLARGING EXPOSURE METERS AMATEUR SUPPLIES fhone Green 136 Boi 478 CjooJu Kjoodtjear "The Greatest Name in Rubber" Hose Belttnf Matting Tires Tubes Batteries Airfoam rroduels Wholesale Only NORTHERN TIRE & RUBBER CO. 712 2nd Ave. P.O.
