GARDNER & 0 By BRUCE PHILLIPS Canadian Press Stati Writer EDMONTON. Fear of accidents has brought a wave of demands from citizens for the removal of Edmonton's municipal airport away from the city. The airjxjrt is located in the growing aiorth.side residential district. Six aviation accidents here in the last two years and recent disasters in the New York metropolitan area where aircraft plowed into homes and apartments have made the public crash-conscious. The airport, once a matter of civic pride, has fallen to the point where officials want it out of sight and jnind as soon as possible. It was from his airport pilots like W. R. (Wop) May flew north to open up the vast ter ritories and usher In the age or the bush pilot. ON PQST'S ROUTE Famed aviator Wiley Post stopped at the Edmonton airport on his history-making, round-the-world flights in 1931 and 1933. From a primitive cow pasture in the early 1930s it has grown to a 750-acre field with more than three miles of runways. Today it represents an investment of $12,000,000, employing 1400 people. Much of this expansion was provided by the impetus of wartime flying, when the RCAF took over the airport. It was also used extensively by U.S. military, aircraft during the construction of the'Alaska Highway. , The oil boom in 1947 brought an onrush of commercial flying. Military aircraft returned to the field with Canada's expanding defence program. Together they made Edmonton's airport one of the busiest in Canada. Last year there were almost 90,000 landings and take-offs. CHANGE OF HEART ' The city's change of heart toward the airport began Jan. 13, 1950. On that day an Air Force observation aircraft crashed in a street near the field, killing two crewmen. Early this year came crashes in New Jersey and New York. They were followed in March by a near-disaster here when a U.S. military transport jumped a fence at the end of a runway on the Edmonton field and stop-ed only 75 feet from a row of houses. ; Mayor William Hawrelak flew to Ottawa. There he was told the airport conformed with safety regulations. And he was General Construction Floor Sanding General Repairs CabinetWork Greer & Bridden LIMITED Phone 909 !15 1st Ave. W. "You were trying fur the mountainous score of 90 points which i is what we would have got for making three spades." "How did I know they couldn't make three diamonds?" sulked Mr. Muzzy. "What if they COULD make it?" Mr. Champion screamed. "It's' only 60 points and you went down 1100 at your bid." Mr. Champion was even lighter than usual. Mr. Muzzy's bidding- is indefensible. Especially when you are vulnerable and the opponents are not, why fight over a measly partial score at the risk of a damaging set? A good signal by Mrs, Keen made certain of a four trick Bet lor the defenders. Mr. Dale led the king of clubs, Mrs. Keen played the seven and Mr. Muzzy won. He laid down his lone diamond and Mr. Dale took the ace. The queen of clubs was cashed and on the jack Mrs. Keen flashed the eight of hearts. Mr. Dale then led to her king. A heart return was taken by Mr. Dale with the jack over Mr. Muzzy's ten. Mr. Dale then led his last club and, in desperation, Mr. Muzzy ruffed with dummy's ten of spades. Mrs. Keen over-ruffed with the jack and now Mr. Dale's spade holding was good for two more under-tricks. Down four. If Mr Dale had led his fourth club before picking up his side's two heart winners, Mr. - Muzzy told military flying gradually would be transferred to Namao airport nine miles away. This was followed by an announcement by Transport Minister Chevrier that consideration wouW be given to the air port relocation question as a Jong-term project.
