Madal H5O0 director said, and placed under a moderate quarantine. This was not entirely the solution, he said. There had been 18 cases of typhoid discovered this year up to this week and further checks would probably disclose more carriers. The Department of Indian Affairs was trying to Increase its immunization program, he said, and most of the water supply for the native vil lages had been put in shape with the exception of Port Simpson. There was no danger of a large-scale epidemic. Regarding polio In the Skeena District, Dr. Carr said the area had been extremely fortunate, only two cases having been reported during the year. He said he had no explanation of why this district should get off so lightly when southern and eastern B.C. areas had been hit so heavily. C INDEPENDENT Considerable progress has been i made In the control of typhoid and para-typhoid in the Skeena Health Unit District. Dr. 8. F. Carr, director, told the quarterly meeting of the Union Board of Health at which Aid. Kay Smith, health nurse, sanitary inspector Len Hiebert and the doctor were the only attendants. Since the meeting could make no decisions,1 Dr. Carr read reports to Aid. Smith which showed that following an extensive survey by Dr. Carr and Dr. John Nelson of Vancouver, a typhoid carrier had been discovered and treated. The two doctors had made a 3.000-mile tour covering areas north to Aiyansh, up the Naas River including all the Indian villages, the Skeena River canneries, checking on all typhoid and para-typhoid cases and contacts known In the past three and a half years. Number of known typhoid cases during the 3'j-year period was approximately 60, Dr. Carr said, and throughout the survey one woman was found to have been the source of at least a third of the typhoid cases. She had never had the disease and had never been pinned down as a carrier.
