Powell at Jerry s Beauty Salon , ph(ne Can m 6th Av contract. This is what happened. Mr Abel cashed the king and ace hearts and led a third heart which Mr. Champion ruffed. Now the great man cashed the ace of spades. So far Mr. Muzzy would have played the South cards the same way. But he was astonished by Mr. Champion's next play, which was a small spade to dummy's nine. Looking slightly bewildered, Mr. Meek won with the jack. Another heart lead could be trumped on the board while Mr. Champion threw a loser from nis hand, so Mr. Meek returned diamond. Mr. Champion went up with the ace, picked up Mr. Meek's two remaining trumps and dummy's club suit was good i'or the rest of the tricks. Note the importance of Mr. Champion's foresight in giving up a spade trick at a time when there was still a trump jn dummy. If Mr. Meek had won .he third lead of spades, a heart return would have forced Mr. Champion to ruff in his own hand again, thus reducing his trumps to a smaller number; than held by Mr. Meek. Or, if Mr. Champion had taken his three top spades and then tried to run dummy's club suit, Mr. Meek would have ruffed in with his jack of spades long be-, fore Mr. Champion could have 1 got rid of three diamonds. ' Astaire still dances like a , whirlwind at 52. Kelly readies the 40 mark next August, yet he' seems to float over the dance floor. i Bolger is back in Hollywood, doing some of his wonderful dances in "April in Paris." So I asked him for the secret on how , ' he and his colleagues remain in such good form. "The only thing I can sug-1 gest," he replied, "is that we learned to dance differently from the kids of today. When I started out, I first learned how to dance in wooden shoes. The clog taught me to dance on my toes. That was before the era of having metal taps on the soles of the shoes. "Because of the taps, today's dancers learn to dance on the balls of their feet. That's a lot harden on them." It's not the usual thing in show business to praise others in the same lield, but Bolger ex pressed a high opinion of Astaire and Kelly. "Fred is simply the greatest," said Bolger. "His every motion denotes class. Kelly is great, too, but in a different way. He has a fine, athletic grace." Bolger mourned the fact tiiat newcomers do not have the training grounds that his generation did. "Vaudeville is gone, and so is the repertory theatre," he remarked. "But the situation is not hopeless. There are still opportunities for young kids to get ahead. For instance, when I do a Broadway show, I have rehearsals for the1 understtifiiPt Many of them have gone on to featured roles because of it." Bolger was pessimistic about the state of the stage musical. "We used to put on big musical productions for $75,000," he commented. "Nowadays a straight play can cost that much A musical runs from $200,000 to $300,000. Naturally, no sin-l person can put up that much money. "Since musicals are so expensive, they usually must run for two years or more before they pay off. It's too tough on an actor to play his heart out for eight times a week for two years."
