Or they can double you if they think that is their most profitable action. Of course, Mr. Net would have made it tougher lor Mr. Dale and Mrs. Keen if he had jumped to four spades on his 'tirst, Chance to bid. A.s it was, he let them exchange- a lot of Information and finally came in with a five spade bid over Mr. Dale's foil:- no trump. MAKE 1 1 E KID Now Mrs. Keen had already made a cue-bid in the spade soil. so in replying lo her partner's asking bid her correct resxms. would have been five no trump, showing an ace outside of the .spade ace. In other words, when an opponent overcalls at the five range, you pass witn no aces, bid one notch higher than the overcall to show one ace, two notches higher to shw two acei and so on. Mrs. teen decided not to show her aces at all. She had alreadj shewn her partner fi.'st-rouud spade control, excellent diamond support and a fine hand overall. If she bid five no trump at this point to show the ace oi hearts, her side would automatically wind up in six diamonds and she was not so sure it could be made. GAVE DALE CHOICE She therefore gave Mr. Dale a choice. She showed willingness to piay against five spades for a penalty. The double suited Mr, Dale. He had opejied the bidding on an absolule minimum and was u.v no mean, auie lie couia taKt: 12 tricks at diamonds. As a matter of fact six diamonds would probably have been down three cn the opening of the king of spades. Against Jive spades, Mrs. Keen led a small diamond, Mr. Daie won and returned a heart. After cashing three hearts, Mrs. Keen led her fourth card in that suit -A V- Tnln , , ,-1 U r, ': c 'e l ' runing wnn tne nine or the Jack and that was set up two sure spade winners for Mrs. Keen. CP PHOTO i i Italian : Fashions i ' , ! By JAMF.S M. EONG ! FLORENCE (APi Italy's fin-; est la.shion houses took the lid : ,off their .spring and .summer collections today and out pon- i ped a iiared hipline. skin-tight jackets, baby bonnet hats and decorations embroidered in .straw. I These stood out among the new tricks of the old trade of fashion with which Italy is making her stronuest bid for world markets. Her finest houses came : here from Milan, Turin, Flor-jence, Rome and Capri to show thrir wares three weeks ahead of Paris. "Tii is time they can't say we copied,' said one designer. Here to look them over are buyers rpre.senting some of the world's big name- stores. Most of the Italian houses are following the same sales for mula which attracted attention I last summer prices 10 to 20 per cent below Paris. Some buyers said, "If Italy 1 I really produces something, it 1 may create a competition that i will bring Paris prices down a bit." The offerings of most of the houses were kept hush-hush, be-ciiisp of extremely competitive conditions. But preview showings ear.ier this week by two major Rome designers showed these '1 Hi re's a new collar, shaped hl- ,. k, ,,.!, .!, i, line. It's used on dresses and! coats alike. One designer used lots of trick little hats which she had copied from her own baby's bonnet. All through the line there was a 'hippy" look. Accentuated by generous use of impressed pleats and in suits witn skin-tight j j.tck"fs with a fishtail flare. Skirts were very full and hemlines ! stayed at mid-calf length, unchanged from last year. Necklines kept to the V. Colors were black or white or very bri"ht. There were few pastels. PARIS NOT WORRIED PARIS i API Paris fashion designers are not losing any sleep over competition from thf current Italian dress shows. ' What is this 'Italian look'? It doesn't exist!" is the reaction of Ivench designers, busy wit h pre- j parations for their own openings commencing Feb. 1 - Let the American buyers play , around with baby bonnets, in ' Italy; they'll still come to us for their serious buying," said dress maker Pierre Balmain today.' "llvo Italians may be competition for London, but they're not for Paris. "We have always sold models to Italian houses, and they're still buying from us. Did you ever hear of a Paris house buying models in Italy? No, ve're not, worried. The novelty of the Italian shows is almost worn off already, and that's all they ever had. Jacques Faith said: ' The Italians can't do us any harm." i I' J W 1 tW 0 V tf I 'WMIk For New Construct and Repair Work " see . r; GREER & BRIDDEN If 1st Ave. W.
