That disaster affected the history of Prince Rupert for it took to his death Sir Charles M. Hays, president of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, w hich was just about to complete the transcontinental railway with this port as its terminus. , There are those who say that the progress of Prince Rupert suffered a generation's setback as a' result. No peacetime deep-sea disaster, before or since, took more lives than did the Titanic. The Titanic went clown with 1513 men, women and children. Only 711 were saved. York. She moved under clear, starlit skies, in a serenity of superlatives. The Titanic, everybody said, was the newest, biggest, most luxurious, safest liner afloat. Late in the afternoon, the air became cold and damp, the decks were deserted. In the evening an Anglican clergyman led a large group in a hymn-sing in the D-deck salon. By 11, most of the passengers had retired. On the bridge, watch officers saw only black, calm seas: The Titanic sped on ai her full 21 knots. About 15 minutes before .midnight, at a point some 450 miles south of Cape Race, Newfoundland, the crow's nest lookout sounded the alarm bell. The first officer also had sighted the peak of a huge iceberg. He shouted to the quartermaster to starboard the helm. The huge ship responded but her forward motion was so great she slid obliquely against the iceberg. There was a gentle lifting motion. Many passengers paid no heed. Below, the Titanic was dying. The submerged bulk of the ice mountain hacf ripped open the double hull of steel plates and the seas rushed in. The wireless crackled out distress signals. At least seven ships heard the pleas but only the cruise ship Carpathia, 48 miles away, was to be of any help. (Later she gathered the survivors, carried them to New York.) , The Titanic's great engines stopped. Apprehension spread among the 'passengers as they gathered on deck. The order went out women and children first into the 16 lifeboats and the lifeboats only had room for one-third of the people aboard. Some women elected to stay with their husbands. Many had no choice. Fame and fortune had no vote. Those remaining behind also included John Jacob Astor, Benjamin Guggenheim, Isidor Strauss. The bow of the Titanic began to dip. But the first lifeboats were only partly filled with women and children as they swayed down toward the dark sea. On the slowly sinking deck, the ship's orchestra played and people aboard and in the lifeboats sang "Nearer, My God, to Thee." At 2:20 a.m., Monday, April 15, about ZVi hours after the collision, the Titanic's lights went out. The stern rose, machinery was torn loose and everything movable rushed in a great roar toward the disappearing bow. The Titanic slid to the bottom of the Atlantic.
