BLAKESLEE NEW YORK Flying saucers I are mirages, which you can create in your kitchen sink, says Dr. Donald H. Menzies, Harvard University astrophysicist. Writing in Look magazine, Dr. Menzies says mirages probably account for most flying saucers that cannot be explained as balloons, plants,. floating kites or 'ffecUons from planes. There Is a photograph of a formation of flying causers created in his laboratory. Th2 Picture looks like the famous lubbock lights or soucer fontta- tion, taken in Texas. Dr. Menzies says the lubbock lights are probably a mirage of a row of distant city street l!?hts. A mirage is an image caused by a lens of air. The lens can form when a layer of warm air lies over layers of cold air. or a cold layer over warm one ;. ure to it Dr.. Menzies mad? his laboratory saucers by filliiij a glass jar half full of benzene, and floating acetone atop the benzene. Benzene has optical qual ities like cold air, end acetone like warm air. ,Gentle stirring produced a narrow layer of a mixture of the two like the lens formed with warm air trusting upward into cold air. A beam of light, focused upward' through the chemicals, curved downward when it hit this layer. A row of light beams produced the laboratory lubbock lights. Dr. Menzies hints that outdoor experiments might be arranged to clinch the mirage explanation. For home-mader saucers, he says, fill your kitchen sink to' the brim with water. On one side, place a box with a series of pin-holes irj. it, a.id a candle or MherUighf in the box. Face tht? lights from the op posite side of the sink, with your eye close to the water, and you will see bright "reflections. If someone stirs the water in'o waves, the lights will float and travel and even show disk-like form.
