He chose the nine and seven of spades, cards he could well afford to let go. Mr. Muzzy had to make just one discard, but he made it count for the opposition. On the fourth diamond lead he played trio ! eight of clubs. This accomplished two things. It told Mr. Champion he could safely lead a club and gave Mrs. Keen her contract. All Mrs. Keen had to do nov: was to lay down the ace, king and another club. Mr. Muzzy won the third round with the queen and the defenders then collected two more heart tricks. But after that they were through. If Mr. Muzzy had held all his clubs, the contract would have been hopeless. Signals are valuable, but they're no good when they lose a trick. By ALAN HARVEY Canadian. Press Stall Writer LONDON fi Earl Alexander in a zooty, multi-colored Canadian tie . . . Saville Row, say it isn't so! That was the shocked comment as cravat fanciers studied a photograph of Britain's defence minister wearing gad, sir! a full-blown, flashy sports tie as magnificently exhuberant as any seen on Briadway. Lord Alexander was shown wearing the ugh creation' at Tokyo airport, and the Daily Mail said even President Truman couldn't have chosen a more exotic number. "That tie!" said the newspaper. "Another reputation ha3 tumbled." Editors of the Tailor ond Cutter, weekly trade publication noted for forthwrlght views on fashion, took one horrified look and declared: ". . . The most startling tie news since William Ewart Gladstone arrived by rowing boat at Wapping Stairs, wearing a choker." "Lord Alexander is regarded as one of England's most conservative and best-dressed gentlemen," said an expert on men's fashions. "Tp put it mildly, this reems to be quite a departure." Grudgingly, some apologists said Alexander's service in Canada was "bound to leave its mark." In Ohobhom, Surrey, Countess Alexander confessed her husband has, in fact, "quite a few" sporty ties. Yes, she said, he had bought them in Canada, and he had a genuine fondness for them. Over to you, Saville Row. ORDERS PHONE CAFE fig KOOM AND BOARD for working man. Pftone Black 660. BULGE Oj'fonH'Irhl John Bulger Lri Third Avenue since the discovery of the ncn Leduc field, its future promises still further increase because of new reserves continually being discovered. N. E. Tanner, minister of mines and minerals for Alberta, told Monday's session of the 49th annual meeting of the paster advertising association of Canada held for four days at Jasper Park Lodge. At the end of last year 48 million acres were under reservation for exploration in addition to nine million acres under lea.se, for drilling, he said. V ' In the year eight new fields had been discovered in the prov. ince to add to the 17 already in production. Fourteen thousand individual oil companies are participating in the development of oil production and spent $200,000,000 last year for exploration and development under the provincial government's policy of promoting individual enterprise and preventing monopoly, Mr. Tanner declared. "If the reserves in the sedimentary basin should be ex hausted at any time in the future, there is an additional reserve in the Athabasca oil sands on the border of Alberta and northwest Territory which should produce at least 100 billion barrels, according to government estimates," the minister said. Prior to Mr. Tanner's address, the association re-elected H. D. Cleveland, of Neon Products of Western Canada, Ltd., Vancouver, as president. Directors elected for the year include: K. A.
