IN THIS ip @ CORNER ii, { By GEOFF AYRES Daily News Sports Editor Best news to come out of last week, at least as far as the sports picture was concerned, was that Ketchikan High School will be down here for a two night stand, December 2 and 3. With the current basketball season just underway, the enthusiastic crowds of Armistice night seem to be dwindling, even though “the Senior B league is only two games old, This fact, coupled with a recap of last year’s record of attendance, seems to point to one thing... the average resident will turn ont to watch out-of- town clubs take on a local all-star squad, but isn’t too interested in what happens in the regular league, . r 4 » Word of the impending Kayhi series should promise a good tumout and give the Prince Rupert Basketball Association the * packed “house” it deserves... the kind of gate it needs to carry on and do a good job. The serles between the Ketchikan High School Polar Bears and Rainmakers from Booth Memorial goes back a number of years. Donated by the late Frank Murkowski, president of the First National Bank in Ketchikan, the trophy bears Mr. Murkowski's name. The two schools each play {wo games at home and should they split as they did in 1952-53, then the school which. has the trophy keeps it until the next time sits up for competition. In 1947 and ‘48, the first year it was up for competition, Manson’s were slow getting off to a start Saturday night in Jithelr first appearance in Senior {|B basketball loop this year, but paced by Bill Sundberg in the second quarter they overtook Gordon and Anderson to go on to a 48-36 victory, The jewellers trailed 8-12 after the’ first quarter but‘ scored 12 ‘to G & A’s five points with Sund- [berg garnering six. Tying baskct was netted by Don Scherk half way through the second quarter. Manson's were not caught after that. With 30 points they led by five at the three quarter mark and racked up another 13 to G & A’s ll in the final frame, Don Scherk topped the scoring list for the winners with 12 points while runner-up was Art Olson with 10; Sunberg and Ray for the evening’s work, G & A’s Jim Flaten was high scorer for the evening with 14 points and Danny Bil! with nine was runner-up, Kayhi took the trophy, but lost it to Bo-Me-Hi next season. The Alaskans did not win it again until the 1951-52 season and they held it until last year, having tied the series the year before. Last year the Rainmakers took the Cup, three games out of four. 0 fe Ye f However, the Assosiation can't turn up an exhibition series like this every week. Inter-cily games cost money, are difficult to arrange sometimes, and the weather here constantly presents 4 question mark which may prevent travelling and cancel the whole deal, The PRBA started off the season with an exhibition { 43 on field goals and made nine out of 20 chances at the foul line count. G &.A scored 13 field goals and nettea 10 out of 23 free throws. For Manson's Don Secherk got foul shots, The winners scored 34 of their Hee, Dominoes 8, Lueklos 1, tata) af 28,000, series, which was well-attended and it has other schemes afoot, too. to bring in outside clubs, In between, the league games con- tinue, the same fellas that get picked for the all-star teams are on the floor, yet they're witnessed by a sprinkling of die-hard fans, relatives and students. The cily has an aggressive basketball exeentive ... what it Jacks is constant fan support. } + ' Famous last words, uttered by Gerdon and Anderson's Danny Bill before the first league game of the season Friday between G & A and the Rainmakers were, “I'm going to play it clean tonight.” Danny player part of the first quarter and. then watched the remainder of the game in strect clothes after being evicted for the forceful sly digs he got in with Greig Forbes, Out of the same game comes the comforting thought that there were enough strip shorts to go around for the G & A players. There were certainly too few tops. George Brown, prexy of the PRBA promises full support of Officials in the league this year and news that the referees and scorers will be formed into their own group in no way lessens this. Perennial “bad boys” on the floor can look forward to Suspensions if their antics become too obstreperous, George says. . * % It’s only a rumor yet. but Johnny Odewes, co-sponsor of the Esquire Men’s Wear ball club with Don Hawryluk promiscs a good story’next month that bodes good for next year’s baseball S@ason.
