Last year the number reached a ree- ard of almost 54,000 bottles, _ In commenting on the service in his 1954 annual report, provincial commissioner C, A, Scott observed that “since its inauguration it has saved the people of ‘his province not one but several millions of dollars.” The training of students in home nursing is an- ather important function of Red Cross and here again the B.C, record stands out. ‘Last year its stu- dent enrollment of 1,105 represented an all-time high for the province. Interest was so great that _many of the students went on to take civil defence ‘nursing, identified as the women’s work committee which is _ responsible for gathering clothes, quilts, blood trans- ‘fusion dressings and other assorted articles to send, where they are most needed, Last year through this medium the B.C. division shipped overseas about 30,000 quilts and children’s clothing articles and pre- ~pared close to 550,000 transfusion dressings, in addi- ition to many other undertakings, * Nor should the exceptional role of the Junior «Red Cross in B.C, escape notice, With an enrollment sof approximately 129,000, B.C. Juniors contributed vubout $16,000 to the work of caring for crippled and shandicapped children in B.C. In addition they went ‘through an intensive course in health and cleanlin- Yess, While the interest of government, teachers and sparents is essential to the success of Junior Red Cross, the organization would be unable to carry on sWwithout the close supervision of the senior body. { This is only part of the story about Red Cross in {13.C, since it omits mention of outpost hospitals, help rfgu. yelerans, disaster ‘service, the swimming and water safety: program, and other projects which the : Society undertakes, But it does help to show how close ‘to home is the work of Red Cross and how much it i peeds our generous support. aR Gehaptest, oe In each province the Red Cross also has a group j As | See It Abn ore a Philpott ‘Blames B.C, Crocus - t t { i 1 : | t | ! i i ( } ! j climate. | That Is doubly true for a per- ‘ron who was born and brought np here in the east, bul who at- stained the bliss of west: coast residence only on reaching mat- iurily, co : Hone had never known what ‘It Is Uke to live in B.C. the Ot- tawa weather could be written off as just one more of the In- ‘serutable mysteries of the Al- mighty, Don’t ask me why the good Lord made mosquitoes, rattle- -fnakes, or rats.
