Ottawa. Moyen e Gate teway” City ‘Tis gr: tifying to note that fora feature article in its 10th anniversary issue, the Northwest Digest : has chosen Prince Rupert. This excellent little magazine, . published at Quesnel, is a Lrue product of the country with — which it identifies iteelf, Unlike some publications which claim to be designed for a particular field of interest, it does not intersperse its contents with stories and articles that one could read anywhere, It slays in character without sacrificing anything in vesudability, or (his reason its choice of Prince Rupert to feature its special issue is especially appropriate As the magazine takes care to point out on its caver, this city is the “Gateway to the Pacific Northwest.” Hf there is any one community that chiracterizes this part of the country, Prince Ru- port with its location an the Pacific, its history and its proxpeels, must surely be it. In describing the early days here, writer Author Downs makes special reference to John Huston, publisher of the city’s first newspaper, the Prince - Rupert Empire. “He was perennially at logeerheads with the rail- way company and loved goading Grand Trunk Pa- cific officials,” the author recalls, “Because of the company's contest (choosing a name with more than 10 let- ters), he considered Prince Rupert a phony name and stressed the fact hy referring to the thriving | port as simply Rupe. His stylé "was rough and ready, but his readers, mostly construction men, were rougher and readier, “Prices he listed as ‘hot bath, including soap and towel, but bring your own dirt, 50¢, with half an hour the limit. Bread, haked hy the mother of three legitimate children, Wea loaf, drinks up and down but none fr eo—and with Seotch whiskey in constant short supply.’ But Mr’ Downs does net leave his readers on this camp-town note, Speaking of the city’s old- timers, he says: “In their time they have seen two hooms that piffled, and today they refuse to be- : vome starry-eyed over the future. But despite their city is growing steadily on a firm economic founda- : tion and they feel that at last. it is coming inta, its * “awn, They do not feel that Rupert will ever be’ a : Vancouver.in-the novth,-butetheware-confident that’ it will attain its rightful heritage as the Gateway tol the Pacifie Northwest.” Says Big Business: Unionismn : Destroying: Workers’.
