Paving Way For Airport.

NE of the smoothest jobs on a major issue seen
O around here in @ long time has been that of the
city airport committee in presenting its brief to the
federal government. ©

The two delegates who made the trip to Ottawa,
J.T. Harvey and Dr. L, M. Greene, did so with a
thorough knowledge of their subject und a support. |
ings case that would stand up under the closest ex-
wmination. Equally important was that they went
with the backing of a cily Which had shown suffic-
ient pood faith to spend some money in getting pro-
fessional advice to make sure this was no fool's
errand.

No one expeeted the delegates would exact an
iumediate promise that an airport would be built,
and no such promise was given, But it is clear from
their report that the officials they saw went far he-
yond the formalities which would have served it
there Was no intent to consider the matter further.
Technicians were called in to study the brief and the
impression was created generally that interest had
moved safely past the principle involved and into the |
details,

It rust be remembered, of course, that there is
comething more to the ease than the city’s convic-
tion such an airport is hecessary. Canadian Pacific
Air Lines has long felt the strain of serving this

to the proposal. It is-a factor that the federal govern-
ment must consider carefully, for with shipping
companies evidently finding it difficult to maintain
their northern passenger service the need for ade-
quate alr facilities is greater than ever.

On occasions it has ceen suggested that Terrace

xir now seems to be clear of this strange idea, Trans-
port Minister Marler, in his first look at the case,
immediately agreed that the intervening distance of
100 miles was too great. In the time required to make
such a trip, a traveller could fly from Prince Rupert
direct to Vancouver and back again, Moreover he
would have greater certainty of making the flight

since the minimum requirements for aircraft land-

ings at Terrace are a 1,500-foot ceiling with three-

inile visibility, while those at Prince Rupert are a
600-foot ceiling with one-milé visibility.

Although the outlook is promising at this point,

it is reassuring to know that the airport committee
