During the 1953 Christmas week- end, for instance, there were 41 fatalities in Canada; last vear the total was 24. And over the New Year's week-end in 1955, 16 died in car accidents while in 1954 the figure was reduced to nine. Part of the reason for this decrease, of course, was psychological, Anything that can help people to think about safety, helps reduce accidents and this may be one of the principal benefits of the “one-for- the-road” campaign, A departing guest who is served secup of hot and strong coffee as he leaves. for in- stance, Is thereby reminded that he needs to take special precautions, The safety expression, “if vou take one for the road, make it coffee,” sticks in his mind and urges him to drive safely, And the sober- ing effect and mild stimulation of coffee will do much in most cases to counteract the depressing effect of gana and the usual holiday fatigue. “A major part ofthe responsibility for street and Ki ighway safety rests with the host but individual - guests should also follow these few sensible rules: * @ If you plan to drive, don’t drink, > @ lf you plan to drink, take a bus ora tani in- stead of using your own car, ® Don't assume you are safe because you Haven't been drinking, the other driver may have heen. - @ Don't ride with a driver who has been dvink- iby. ne \ am ; 0 If vou take one or tr 0 dvinks, make your ohe-for-the-coad coffee, It will help you to get home alive, @ If you must drive, never exceed 20 miles in thegity and 33 miles on the highway, Sree pes NOW FLY WONDERFUL TCA VISCOUNT ALL THE WAY TO THE EAST ' Vou can be there taster, back socaer, travel db eresder conlart and still sive maney — for when you ty there ds no lipplig, no extra m your vir tire gets you there, we ee pH Sete re See bang Tpnvet Mae) ot call VA HF) Vian: Wve EE AoW OLIL, 656 Tee Ot Tapp Coeorgdi Hotel, —<==S ~— are SK Le Just cat filPem up— Civeste oy family -~ mealtimes, snacks or partes you'll find you Gant keep enough delicious Hindley & Palmers Hiscuits . in the house! What, really, has happened’ since July 1955 ta give the pessi- mists fresh hope? Nothing exeept that the Rus- slans are agaln acting Hke Rus-: slans. Anybody who imagined that the famous July party was to be followed by Russian withdrawal to the boarders of pre-war Rus- sla should have his head read, ‘Russia Is no more likely to with- draw of her own free will to the pre-1939 borders of the Red Em- pire than the U.S.A. Is likely to withdraw to her same tinits. Indeed the one thing whic h the United States fears most in the present game of power politics is that Russia should fine up the, non-Communist nations of the world behind some such plan as withdrawal of all United States land and alr forces to U.S.A. as part of a horse trade which would also compel all Russian forces to withdraw Into Russia. + ob + I SAY that the Americans are more afraid of some such move by Russia than they are of any-. ‘thing else that Russia might do in the next few years. They are afraid of the move because it would have, tremen- dous carrying power oh both sides of the Iron Curtain, The _ peoples of eastern Europe are all eager to get exactly what Austria already ‘has- -complete lberation from all foreign occupation. But it is a sad mistake to stippose that the same sentiment does not exist on the western side of the Iron Curtain. The only thing which has held back the “Eur- ope for the Europeans” cry so far is the obvious transparency and hypocrisy of the Commun- ist canspalgn in France and Italy. There is hardly anybody in all Europe so dumb as not to know what the Communists really mean when they chalk up slo- gus on walls reading “Yankeo .Go Home." They mean that they want the Russians, or thelr local agents to walk in as soon as the Amerieans, or their allies, cut, Whatever else the western Eur- opeans want, they do not want to become part of the Red Empire, either at the point of Russian bayonets, as in Poland, Hungary, or Rumania, or as a result of en inside Job burglary as in Caecho- slovakia.
