By reviewing poor driving rec- ords the superintendent of mo- tor vehicles ordered suspension af licences of 1,631 drivers this year, compared to 997 in 1956, This covered the period of Jan-. vary to July. This is a 63.3 pér cent increase. - These figures serve to show the public that the government deems it to be a privilege. for anyone to operate a motor ve- hicle. This view is justified until there is a sharp decrease in the numbers of road deaths and ‘ac- cidents. When that happy day arrives the motoring public may once again regard driving as a private right, which it pays heavily to exercise.—- Cowichan Leader. “GROWING PAINS: _ Feelings often run high when the suggestion of amalgamation in essential services is brought forward. Motives are questioned. Cries of “super government,” loss of individual action, and “octopus” are heard. Often the physical and economic results of man’s occupation of the soil are lost in the shuffle. The ac- cumulation of a great many in- dividual mistakes which in the short ,term were harming 10 one are found to be hurting the mass ‘in the long term. — The hurt is felt in the porket- book and there is the rub. So, if Liberals may secretly be a wee bit dismayed at the enlist- ment in the Tory government of a reinforcement of the recogniz- ed international stature of Dr. Sidney Smith they will be at least partially consoled: on -the score “we told you so.” SO FAR as the appointment of Dr. Smith is concerned, it is bound to be a political asset for the Conservatives, except on one very Minor score. Even before Dr. Smith’s ap- pointment there were minor grumblings to the effect that the Toronto area was already over-represented in the new government.
