Not only did the monthly building figures surpass months in previous years but the year’s total building figure of $2,131,748 topped any construction in the city’s 48-year his- tory, Cheering indeed is the amount of home build- ing which has not only swelled the city’s residential areas but made a marked improvement in the actual appearance of the town. Many of these homes, built by their owners, have been erected at great sacrifice and demonstrates the determination of a large num- ber of people to be independent and yet contribute something concrete to the good of Prince Rupert. The New Canadians have been in the vanguard of this move towards home-ownership and they are to be complimented on their foresight. With such community spirit and a closer ad- herence to the National Building Code there is every sign that a favorable precedence was set last year. It is to be hoped that there will be no slackening in building and quality in the future and that an early on the proposed 50 economic rental homes sought by the city will be made to further boost housing facili- ties here. Admirable also is the first-grade type of busi- ness premises that are springing up all over town. Not only are the buildings of modern and pleasing design but they are being constructed in such loca- _tions that the whole business district is spreading out in a manner to make the whole centre of town more attractive. There is no reason to think that 1958 will not be -as big a year as last one. If the 50 houses are ap- proved and residential building continues at a simi- lar pace to that of 1957, then there is every reason to believe that this year’s construction will equal that of last year, This trend is also predicted for the whole of Can- ada by Tullis N. Carter of Toronto, president of Can- adian Construction who said in a year’s end message that the 1957 record level of $6.9 billion will be dupli- | cated in 1958. ‘However, Mr. Carter said housing, municipal spending and road construction will take a more dominant position in the building picture rath- ey than industrial construction. “The recent reduction in NHA down payment requirements and the record immigration program | in 1957 will increase the demand for housing,” Mr. Carter said. The construction association president said that | “by and large, the outlook for 1958 is favorable be- | cause of the continued general str ength of business | ‘and sizeable carryover of construction work from 1957.’ Wecan safely predict that with the possibility of a new federal building, new houses, renovations te the present federal building and construction of < new senior high school, Prince Rupert will play a ma- jor part in Canada’s huge construction boom this yeay, a sew es - eee neon perenne Reds Warn Turkey! But sometimes an adver- tising man does better by stay- ing in the background than he loes‘by coming out inte the imelivht himself. In his first big speech, in his tapacity as national organizer ‘or the Conservative party, Mr. Grosart told his Calgary audi- nee that “our workers tell us there isn't a seat that we can't vin’ in British Columbia, It so happens that the boasi- ful prediction which the nation- al Conservative organizer is now making about B.C. is almost word for werd und letter for let- ‘er the sai.e as was made by Premier Bennelt, just a year car-: Ner. In 1957, it was the Social Credit leader in B.C. who was boasting that his party would win every one of the twenty two ‘eats in the province. and cap- ture at least forty seats in Can- ada. When the votes were cast, Mr. | Bennett's party had taken just six of the twenty two seats in BC. It is too soon yet even to guess - what will happen either in B.C. : or the country as a whole. But in view of what happened last: year, Mr. Al Grosart might be well advised to “lay orf’ the prophecies, of the variety that sound Hke propaganda boasts. only two sources from which the Conservatives might hope to win enough extra seats to ob- tain a clear working: majority, under their own banner.
