While a few other ships have sailed through the North- ‘west Passage, only the RCMP vessel St. Roch is known to have successfully navigated Bellot Strait, making the passage in 1942. The Norwegian explorer, Roald Amundsen, took the Gjoa from east to west across the Arctic early in 1906 but he passed north of North Somerset Is- Jand as did the Labrador when it made the passage in 1955. Reason for the new attempt to navigate the narrow and hazardous strait is that it will enable the U.S. ships to land supplies closer to Distant Ecarly Warning (DEW) line bases. The supply ships now are approaching the strait from the west. Bellot Strait, 18 milcs long, separates Somerset Island from Botthia Peninsula and lies about 400 miles north of the Arctic’ Circle, This map shows the routes taken by Amundsen’s ship, the St. Roch and the Labrador when they completed the Passage. When the supply ships, out of Seattle, have b2en guided through the’ strait they will have sailed across the top cf North America.
