The trouble all began a few weeks back when one of — the nudes failed to show up for the big Hon cage number in the show The Nudes of Paris at South- hampton. Actually, the show’s nudes weren't quite—they wore G-strings. ‘ MOTHER STEPPED IN Mrs. Quinn, wife of the show's producer and mother of a 17- months-old daughter, agreed to take the missing girl’s place. - Applauding this show-must- go-on spirit, The Sketch carried a story headéd “Mother Tekes Nude's Place in Lions Show.” This, Mrs. Quinn complained, gave the impression that she appeared unclothed (in a G- string, you understand) whereas in fact she wore a Bikini and bra, She added that in her view it would be highly immodest for a young mother to appear in a G-string. Judge Malcolm Hilbery = said ing. “All I know about a G- string,” he said, “is that it is the lowest note on a violin.” FINE DISTINCTION Counsel for Mrs. Quinn ex- plained that in show business a G-string is an article covering the absolute minimum of. a showgirl, “And a Bikini?” asked the judge. A Bikini, said the lawyer, is a kind of swimming suit which covers by comparison much more than the minimum. He intro: duced one G-string and one Bi- kini in evidence. The newspaper’s lawyer said indignently: “Et' is rather ridiculous, rather monstrous—in fact complete nonsense—that she sheuld ask for damages for a statement that she appeared posed as a nude, wnen she ap- peared very largely naked, dressed in a Bikini.” SHE HAD TO PAY COSTS The judge said it was up to and with sequins on it. She ask- , he found all this very mystify- | the jury to decide the difference in modesty between the protec- tion of a G-string and:“the. ‘par- tial covering afforded by ~ the bra and V-shaped drawers call- ed. the Bikini.” The jury decided after due de- liberation that Mrs. Quinn had no just claim against the news- of the suit—roughly £1,500. “Oh, well,” Mrs. Quinn told reporters as she stuffed the Bi- kini and G-string ‘into her handbag. “That’s Jlife—and Id rather be in the Hons’ cage than in that courtroom.” EASY-GOING ELMIRA, Ont, @—"Be happy- go-lucky and you're on the road to married happiness and long- evity,” was the advice of Mr. and Mrs. George Voll as they celebrated thelr golden wedding anniversary.
