London | Fashions Serene By SYLVIA HACK Canadian Press Staff Writer LONDON ()—- London's fash- ion houses have gone -into a whirl of feverish activity to launch a line of placid serenity. The chief designers scheduled three showings a day of their elegant styles, generally featur- ing an easy flowing shouider line, curving gently through the waist and tapering seductively to the hemline. ' Skirts are around the 15-inch mark and hibiscus red will dom- inate the fall scene. Close color runners-up include every shade of red from pink to pimento. Black, grey, blues—gentian wud violet—and neutrals are also favorites. ANCIENT PARALLEL Ronald Paterson, one of the younger designers, delved into history to give his collection a name. He calls it the “chia linc” —based on the shape of a Chi- nese vase called a chia, of the Shangyin Dynasty around 1500. But there’s nothing ancient about Paterson’s designs. In his white and grey Mayfair salon, models demonstrated how ele- gant the chia lines can be. The designer favored subtle- toned tweeds for suits with a de- finite dip at the back of the jacket. Dresses are mostly belt- less but waists are carefuily noted with clever detail. Suits come with fur collars and coats of all lengths are in. They are cut completely straight or taper narrowly, but they all have ex- tra shoulder width which is part of the new line. Paterson favors both short and full-length evening dresses, and chiffon is still top twilight 7 fabric, sometimes swatched tightly in Grecian folds and pleats. A new-comer in. late- day weaves is a fine, lacy mo- hair dyed in candy colors.
