The books will be reviewed every week tor the information of the read- ing public in an effort to slimulate interest in the Public Library, located in the Civic Centre, “A WOMAN DOCTOR LOOKS AT LOVE AND LIFE” By DR. MARIAN HILLIARD Reviewed by Doris Muir Doctor Marian Hilliard, chief of gynecology and obstetrics at the Women’s College hospital in Toronto has:written “A Woman Doctor Looks at Love and Life.” It is quite an undertaking for a busy doctor who operates every morning, delivers about 40 babies a month and sees a stream of patients in her office long - .“A father I know,” after darkness has fallen. Then too, she makes numerous speeches and her university ad- dress has been an annual affair. Doctor Hilliard’s 25 years of practice thoroughly qualifies her to advise and sympathize with 41] women, which shé does with an amazing insight foibles and peculiarities. . “Obstetricians,” Dr. Hilliard observes, “have the opportunity, ~-Tate in médicine—of treating the Whole life of a patient rather than just the health.” The suggestions put forth in the chapter on “What should I tel! my. children’, are incisive and informative on such cdm- plex and at times bewildering problems as advising, caring for and teaching children from in- fancy on through adolescence. Conformity, Dr. Hilliard feels, is a real problem during adoles- cence and. the best weapon is humor. she says, “was chuckling over his own wit the other day. His son, it seems, had accused him of letting him- self become flabby, unlike the man next door, who exercised regularly. “Slouched in this position,’ the father told his son loftily, ‘Iam able to devote all my strength to keeping my _ brain limber so that I can deal with my upstart children’.” ‘Nor are the husbands forgot. ten in this book. - Men will be in comp! lete agree- nt with the opinion that a n’s-life is much more diffi- into their groaning responsibility and the lonely and ofter fruitless search for pride in himself. Fear is another subject dealt with by Dr. Hilliard. Most fears, she feels, are acquired—since we pare born with but two, fear of jlgud noise and the fear of sud- den re'ease of support. The acquired fears are the ones that defeat us, strangling the personality and the ability to love. Fear of old age, on the other hand is ful! of disabilities that Mrs. Louis Gastaldini was elected Honored Royal Lady of the Order of the Royal Purple Tuesday night when the order held its annual meeting at the home of Mrs. N. A Centennial Anthology” con- tains material selected from nearly 4,500 original manu- scripts, most of which came from British Columbia. - Submission also came in from every other Canadian province, from Ameri- can states as widespread as California and North Carolina, and even a few from England. “In addition, we went over scores Of books and early news- papers to find the best previous- ly printed material.” “As well as nearly 100 extracts from manuscripts, diaries and newspapers of the past and present, there are 55 articles, 10 short stories and 38 poems,” he said, “These represent the work of authors with an international reputation, such as Earle Birney, Roderick Haig-Brown and Lister Sinclair, as well as many B.C. writers making their first an- pearance in print.” “We are extremely proud of the fact that the anthology is in every way a British Colum- bia product, from the writers, artists, photographers and their subject material, to the design and manufacture of the actual hook,” Dr. Walters said.
