He has told the Canadian Univer- sity Liberal Federation that the Conservatives are responsible for unemployment, This is the sort of thing that used to be popular | on the hustings in days when the electorate was less literate politically. University students, of all people, should be able to see the phoniness of it. Unemployment is too serious a matter for the making of political hay, the more so hecause talking it up, and thus undermining publie confidence, is one of the surest wavs of making it worse. And unemployment is not created overnight—or in seven months. It is the end product of long busi- ness and econemic trends abr ot as well as at home. 1 Tf foreign countries are not buying British Co- lumbia lumber, and in consequence British Columbia loggers are without jobs, it is most certainly not the fault cf a government that, in its seven short months 6f office, has made a more extensive effort to find new markets for Canadian goods than the Liberals did i in their year's in power : Indeed, the Conserve ativ es would be Justified in arguing that the severity of the present recession is gt least in part the result of the free-wheeling atti- tude of the Liberals to the post-war boom, failing to control its rate and taking the easy course of putting nearly all their trade eges in the handy American basket, 4 . 7 . . —The Vancouver Province. Car-Baiting Cross Walk Artists AR-BAITING seems to be an up and coming game . with pedestrians these days. At least the num- ‘Yer of walkers glaring at motorists from pedestrian- Gossing’s seem to be on the increase. * The disease, if disease it be, is not confined to any age bracket. Youngsters, oldsters and the middle aged all seem to enjoy stepping between the magic lines of cross-walks split seconds before a car arrives , : and then dawdling across the road. Usually they crease their brow, with a scowl for the motorist as they cross, daring*him to hit them: > It would appear that many pedestrians are quite convinced that not only does the law say the motorist should stop for them, but that every car has brakes good enough to stop on a dime—regardless of the confusion such sudden stops cause among following traffic. In most circles the car driver is regarded as the number one menace on the highway. We have no de- sire to protest this status, but we venture to suggest that in most cities the car-baiting cross-walk fiend is right up alongside the man behindthe wheel. “You can’t hit me, I’m ona cross-walk”’ prove a fatal philosophy. could —The Penticton Herald. > Soni P lures If ve ask any thing in my name I will do it.
