When materialistic men of science announce publicly that there are grounds for presuni- ing the existence of a soul in man, and its persistence after death, the average lay believer may feel that his faith may be justified by demonstrable fact. It has long been the belief of many advanced psycholo- gists that a soul is the heritage of every child born of earth, and that it may grow or wither with the growth of the indi- vidual, according to cultivation or lack of cultivation; that the soul, nurtured and cultivated, grows and expands into an in- destructible though elusive element, regnant beyond the grave; that the soul, uncul- tured and neglected, withers and dies, leaving its clay tene- ment on the same plane with the brute, with hope of im- mortality gone. So.eminent an authority and material reasoner as Sir John Oliver Lodge, president of the the British Association for the Advancement of Science, re- cently announced that ‘facts reduced to order by the methods of science have convinced me that memory and affection are not limited to the, association of matter by which alone they can mainfest themselves here and now, and that personality OFFICE Syndicate, Grand Trunk Building, Contract Saturday, Sept. 20, 1913. persists beyond bodily death.” This is advanced ground for the man of material science, emphasized by the further statement of Sir John that il “is error to deny the existence of anything which makes no appeal to organs or sense, and no ready response to labora- tory experiment.” The words of the scientist will bring cheer to many half doubting believers in- immor- tality who have desired to be sincere in their belief, but who have been unable to fully ad- just their matter-of-fact ex- periences in this workaday world to the theory of the im- mortality of so fleeting and in- tangible an essence the soul. as —_—_—_0—_———_ THAW MAY RUN AS A NATIONALIST. Those bandsmen ho played the national anthem and the individuals who waved the flag under Harry Thaw’s window at Coaticook are evidently Tories who have not yet recovered from the election of 1911. It is possible that Thaw may run a Nationalist in the next election, in which event the Honorable Louis Phillip Pelle- tier, no doubt, will give him a helping hand. And it is in your power to aid the Stroller in his specializing. | You have no doubt, Mr. Dick-} eson, heard of Harry and Evelyn Thaw. You will remember that Harry ‘‘got off on the wrong leg.” Evelyn evidently got off the same way. Of the latter, neither you or the Stroller is cer- tain. Anyway, Harry escaped from a New York few days ago and is now fighting ex- tradition from Canada. If he succeeds, the Stroller has an idea for providing a position for him; also of endeavoring to pursuade Evelyn to retire from the light and join Harry in the retreat which the Stroller will en- deaver, with your co-operation, to provide.. It is this: You have a number of road- 2rouses On your winter mail trail and it is necessary that each road house have both a man and wo- man to preside over ‘its destinies —the man to provide wood and water and the woman to warm up of course, prison a lime- rural the beans every lime a stage -is due. Now what is the matter with having the Thaw family come to the Yukon and conduet one of your road houses? ‘The Stroller trows it would be the most popu- lar station on the route, From a financial point of view it would also be a great advertisement for the stage line, especially if Kv- elyn lattach to being hold the i ful |}municated STROLLER WHITE HAS SETTLED THE THAW CASE EFFECTUALLY WHILE HARRY CHOPS THE WOOD EVELYN WILL WARM OVER THE BEANS FOR TRAVELLERS ON THE WHITE PASS LINE the hand of John L. The Stroller has not yet com- with either .of the Thaws regarding his scheme for their future welfare. In fact, he just thought of it while wonder- ing to himself what you could possibly do to make your scenic route more popular, and decided to put the proposition before you before writing to either Harry or Evelyn. The Stroller has been corresponding with the latter for sometime, but nol concerning road houses. The Strolle Mr. has good reason, believing that you have unbounded faith in ad- vertising—thalt you believe prin- ters ink, properly distributed, the greatest boon of the age to a public man.
