For the first time in many years it is the intention of the directors o1 the Prince Rupert Hospital to ask the public for funds with which to make improvements, full particulars of which will be given before the drive commences. At the meeting on Friday night Judge Young on behalf of the local Red Cross Society presented the directors with a marked check for $2,000 to be used toward the erection of a new nurses’ home. The home is badly needed as the young ladies have to live right in the building where they work, and where they have no suitable re- creation and sitting rooms. The nurses work hard and they should get the very best treatment. The public owes it to them to make conditions better. Because the hospitals have always been kept up by public funds, nurses have been expected to work long hours and to put up with inconveniences which no other people would think of tolerating. Now it is being recognized that even nurses have rights and that ithe profession must be made attractive. President D. G. Stewart, when elected on Friday as a director, said he had intended to retire but he had reconsidered the matter and would stay with the hospital until the erection of the nurses’ home was an accomplished fact. He felt sure the people of the city would respond to a call when asked. Territorials for Great Britain. Great Britain intends to continue her territorial army, the body of men who during the great war were the first to answer the call to go overseas and who, because they were trained, were the ones who helped to stay the Germans in their first onrush. The value of a militia was then clearly shown. In Canada it is proposed to reorganize the militia, and Prince Rupert will likely get one unit. The Canadian militia corresponds to a large extent to the British territorials. They give a small portion of their time to military training so that if they should be needed at time of national danger they may be called to the colors. They will not be sent overseas unless they volunteer their services. Currie was a colonel of militia before he went overseas. Hundreds o* the best officers that served in the late war received their training in the civilian army. . Valuable Asset . To Community. The value of the fishing industry to this port is well set out in the statistical article published in this paper today. It is shown there that the fish landed at this port last year is valued at over four and a half millions of dollars. That is an immense sum of money to be spent, for a large part of it is spent here. Anything that we can do to aid the fishing industry should not be left undone, Government Aid to Soldier Fishermen. From Vancouver exchanges it seems clear that the Dominion Government is about to arrange for aid to returned soldier fisher- men much as they have done for returned soldier farmers. I{ there is a training school for fishermen established it should be located here. This is the fishing centre of the province and is the logigal place for the fostering of the industry. The Dominion Government will receive every possible support from everyone here, if they undertake this work in a businesslike way; that is, in such a way as to be of the greatest possible advantage to the DENTISTRY At a price you can afford to pay Have Your Teeth Examined Today.
